A
Academic Employment
Academic employment includes teaching, research, and some administrative positions. Academic employment is specified by law to be unclassified and, in general, is governed by the Administrative Rules of the Oregon State Board of Higher Education (OSBHE) and by Oregon State University regulations.
At-will Employees
The employment relationship between an employee and employer that may be terminated at-the-will of either party. When an employer is using its discretion and terminating an employee, the employer may do so for any reason, so long as the reason is not prohibited by contract, state or federal law, constitutional requirements, or public policy.

Classified Employment
All university positions not specified by law to be unclassified are classified. Classified employment policies conform to the merit system rules of the State of Oregon; all positions within this system are classified by the Oregon State Board of Higher Education according to the duties, responsibilities, and authority of each position.
Cooperative Agreement
A cooperative agreement is any formal, legally-binding contract between Oregon State University and another entity (a government agency, private company or organization) whereby the parties to that agreement agree to either share or cooperate in a project. A cooperative agreement outlines the responsibilities and respective obligations of the parties to the agreement and is always required when there is going to be an exchange of funds and/or a commitment of personnel resources. If there is no exchange of funds, a cooperative agreement normally outlines the responsibilities of the parties involved in the agreement.
As related to student employment, those cooperative agreements that provide the opportunity for students to obtain on-the-job work experience and skills in the private sector relevant to the field of study. The private companies also assist in the development of the University's curriculum related to the field or industry.
Cooperative Work Experience (Co-Op)
Work experience obtained by OSU students per a cooperative agreement.

Dual Enrollment
When a qualified student is enrolled at OSU and a one of several other Institutes of Higher Education. Dually enrolled students can attend classes at either school, use financial aid at both schools, and have the option of using campus facilities and services such as residence halls, student health center, e-mail accounts, etc. See the OSU degree partnership (dual enrollment) program website for a list of participating colleges and universities.

Employment Registration
The process of completing forms that provide information required by various regulations. Data is entered into a personnel data base system. Active records allow the processing of monthly pay.
Equal Employment / Affirmative Action
Under the authority of the President, Affirmative Action Program actively ensures that there is no discrimination on the basis of age, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, marital status, or mental or physical disability in any area, activity, or operation of the university.
All students are to have equal access to all employment opportunities for the purposes of being informed and to make application.

Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA)
A Federal Law that establishes a Social Security and Medicare Tax on employers and employees. The employee's portion of the tax is deducted from the paycheck and then matched by the employer's portion of the tax. These monies are applied toward benefits to be paid upon disability, retirement, or death.
Federal Work Study (FWS)
Student employment opportunities that are similar to regular student employment, except part of the funding is provided by the Federal Government. Only students who are determined eligible for this type of employment can obtain work study student employment.

Graduate Student
A student who is enrolled in a program of study beyond the baccalaureate or post baccalaureate level, leading to an advanced degree. Note: Post baccalaureate is not the same as graduate level).
A student who holds a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and has been admitted to the University and a major department or program to work toward a graduate degree or graduate certificate.
A holder of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university who does not wish to pursue a post baccalaureate degree, a graduate degree or graduate certificate, or a professional degree may be classified as a non degree-seeking graduate student.
Grievance
A complaint regarding an act or omission of the employer in its relationship with the employee that the employee believes is unjust or inequitable. See STU EMP 101-04: Grievance Procedures.

International Student
Any student who is not a United States citizen either by birth or naturalization
Internship
A high-quality, field-related experience that supplements academic training and education.

Non-OSU Employer
Any person, entity, or organization not officially recognized as being part of Oregon State University, which employs students to perform tasks for compensation or as a volunteer or intern.
Non-OUS Institution
Any higher educational institution not included in the Oregon University System (Eastern Oregon University, Oregon Institute of Technology, Oregon State University, Portland State University, Southern Oregon University, University of Oregon and Western Oregon University).
Non-System Student
A High School student, Home School student, Community College student, Vocational School student or Technical School student outside the Oregon University System (i.e. Eastern Oregon University, Oregon Institute of Technology, Oregon State University, Portland State University, Southern Oregon University, University of Oregon and Western Oregon University).

Off Campus Student Employee
An educationally enrolled student who works for any non-OSU employer.
Oregon University System (OUS)
The Oregon public higher education system that oversees and provides services to Oregon's six state universities (Eastern Oregon University, Oregon Institute of Technology, Oregon State University, Portland State University, Southern Oregon University, University of Oregon and Western Oregon University).
OSHA
Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration. A division of the state Department of Consumer and Business Services, formerly the Department of Insurance and Finance, which oversees the Oregon Safe Employment Act.
OSU Employer
Any person, entity or organization that is officially recognized as being part of Oregon State University, whether or not physically located on the main Corvallis campus, that employs students to perform tasks for compensation or as a volunteer or intern.
Other Enrolled (Non-System) Student Employment
Student employment opportunities for students who are enrolled at institutions outside of the Oregon University System (OUS).
Overtime
Any work that exceeds 40 hours in one workweek is overtime work. The established work week at OSU is Sunday through Saturday.

Regular Student Employment
Student employment opportunities that are offered to academically enrolled student by OSU, whether the job is on or off the main campus. Students are OSU student employees and earn an hourly wage paid to them through the OSU Payroll Office by OSU departmental funds.
Regular Terms
A period of time during the calendar year when classes are offered during the fall, spring and winter months. The specific dates of the terms can vary from one institution to another.
Fall Term: September - December
Winter Term: January - April
Spring Term: April - June

Student Employment
The program established through Career Services, Financial Aid and Human Resources that provides employment opportunities for students relating to on campus and off campus jobs, federal work study jobs, internships and cooperative work experience.
Student Employment Application
This is the general application form available for use by OSU departments in the hiring process of seeking student employees. The form may or may not be required, according to the desire of the individual department.
Summer Term
An eleven week period during the calendar year when classes are offered during the summer months, usually June – August.
System Student
Student enrolled at one of the 6 OUS universities (Eastern Oregon University, Oregon Institute of Technology, Oregon State University, Portland State University, Southern Oregon University, University of Oregon, and Western Oregon University), including dual enrollments.

Term Break
The period of time between the end of one term and the beginning of the next term when there are no classes or exams.

Work Place Culture Skills
General skills learned from experiences occurring in the workplace, which assist an employee in acclimating to the work climate on the job. They can include, but are not limited to, acceptable dress, grooming, language, work ethic, timeliness, efficiency, attitude, willingness to learn, and how to handle various situations that may arise (conflict, questions, scheduling, workload, etc).
Work Study Student Employee
The period of time between the end of one term and the beginning of the next term when there are no classes or exams.

Employer on or off campus that hires students and receives federal work study monies for payment of wages to the student worker.
