Welcome New Students!

Whether you're a first time college student or a transfer from another college or university we are proud to welcome you to Oregon State University. We know that although this is a very exciting time for you it can be a little confusing as well. We have compiled this list of topics to help ease your transition.

When Will I Receive My Bill?

OSU provides eBill statements electronically through eBill. We do not send out paper copies of statements. Your Fall Term charges will appear on your October eBill statement which will be processed around October 5th. Payment will be due by November 1st to avoid interest charges. Please see our Billing and Payment Information page for more details on statement dates and due dates.

You will be notified that your statement is ready to view via an email to your ONID email address. If you have not yet signed up for ONID you may do so at http://onid.oregonstate.edu/. The eBill system can be accessed at http://mybill.oregonstate.edu.

You can share your billing information with another person such as a parent by setting them up as an authorized user in eBill. Authorized users receive email notification when your statements are available and have the option of paying on line through eCheck as well. Authorized users can only view and pay ebills through eBill, grades cannot be viewed through this system. To set up an authorized user log on to eBill at http://mybill.oregonstate.edu

More information on eBill can be found at studentfinance/eBill/

How Do I Get My Financial Aid Refund?

Financial Aid Refunds are produced when a student's financial aid and scholarships exceed the allowable charges on a student account. We say allowable charges because some financial aid is restricted in what it can cover so in some situations a student may receive a refund check but still owe on their account. Be sure to check your eBill statements even if you receive a refund.

There are two ways to receive a refund check, either as a paper check or by direct deposit. Refunds are processed as paper checks unless you sign up for direct deposit. Please note that the distribution process listed below pertains only to the regular academic year. The schedule differs for Summer Term.

Paper Checks

Paper checks will be available in the MU Ballroom from 7:30 AM until 2:00 PM on the first day of the term provided that your financial aid/scholarship funds are processed by the Wednesday prior to the start of the term and you have a refund available. After 2:00 PM on the first day all checks are mailed to your current mailing address on file.

Direct Deposit

Funds are generally transferred to your bank on the first day of the term provided that your financial aid/scholarship funds are processed by the Wednesday prior to the start of the term and you have a refund available. If your financial aid/scholarship funds post after the Wednesday prior to the start of the term you will receive your refund within three business days of the date that the refund process is initiated.

Refunds After the First Two Weeks of the Term

If your financial aid/scholarship funds are posted after the first two weeks of the term you will need to request your refund by sending an email to refund@oregonstate.edu with your name, student ID number and birth date.

Signing Up For Direct Deposit

You can sign up for direct deposit at Student Online Services. Just log onto Student Online Services, select "Personal Information" and then "View or Update Direct Deposit Authorization.". For refund checks select the"Student Accounts/Employee Payables" section. It does take three weeks to set up direct deposit so any refund checks processed before the three weeks are up will be issued as paper checks.

Please see our Financial Aid Refund Policy for more details on refunds and direct deposit.

How will dropping or withdrawing from a course affect my tuition/fee charges?

If you choose to drop or withdraw from a course you should be aware that your decision may also have financial implications. Depending on when the drop or withdraw occurs, you may be responsible for some or all of the tuition/fee charges for the course. For more details please see the Tuition Reduction Schedule.

Can I charge my Textbooks to my Student Account?

Purchases made at the OSU Bookstore cannot be charged to your student account. Students receiving financial aid refunds often purchase their books before the start of the term with personal funds and then reimburse themselves when their financial aid refund become available. Alternatively, some students wait until they receive their financial aid refunds after the start of the term before purchasing their textbooks.

Can You Share My Financial Information With My Parents?

The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of a student's educational records. FERPA also applies to the student's financial records. This means that we need to have your permission to release your financial records to anyone. If you wish to have us share your student account information with another person you will need to present photo ID at our office and sign a release form. If you can't make it to our office we can mail you a form but you will need to have it notarized if you do not appear at our office in person. Release forms automatically expire at the end of the academic year.

Student Finance release forms are only valid for the Student Finance/Cashier's Offices. Other offices such as the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, Office of the Registrar and Admissions Office have unique forms and policies regarding release of information.

Please see our Student Records and Privacy section for more information about FERPA.
