GREEN ALERT: Hatfield Marine Science Center Closed


OSU's Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport is closed today, Monday, December 3, because of a power outage and continued high winds. The center will open for regular hours on Tuesday unless continued power outages at the Center or additional weather-related problems occur.

OSU students, employees and visitors are urged to use caution when traveling today. Continuing high winds, strong rain, and potential flooding are forecast for much of the state.

The National Weather Service has issued the following forecast.

RAIN...HEAVY AT TIMES. HIGHS NEAR 60.
.TONIGHT...RAIN IN THE EVENING...THEN SHOWERS AFTER MIDNIGHT.
LOWS 45 TO 50. SOUTH WIND 20 TO 25 MPH THROUGH THE EVENING WITH
GUSTS TO 45 MPH. WIND EASING TO 15 TO 20 MPH BY MIDNIGHT.

The National Weather Service reports that a high wind watch is in effect from late Saturday night through Monday evening for the North and Central Oregon coast, as well as South Washington. The affected areas include Newport, Lincoln City, Astoria, Tillamook, Florence, Cannon Beach, Long Beach and others.

Winds of 25 mph to 40 mph are beginning Friday, November 30, with gusts to 60 mph. By Sunday, winds of 45 mph to 60 mph and gusts of 80 mph to 100 mph are possible. The most intense period of wind is expected to be Monday afternoon. Winds are projected to ease Monday evening as the cold front responsible for this weather moves onshore.

In the Willamette Valley, including Corvallis, winds on Sunday and Monday are projected to reach 20 mph to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Light snow is also a possibility, beginning Saturday.

Please be aware of this advisory, plan accordingly. Facilities Services is making the proper accommodations to respond to such an event and to respond to any related power outages, downed trees or other related situations. If you experience any power outages due to the high winds, please contact your building manager, who will forward that information to Facilities Services. If you have difficulty making contact with your assigned building manager and need immediate assistance, please contact Facilities Services at 737-2969.
