ESOL/Bilingual Endorsement FAQ


How many credits do I need to take?

The ESOL endorsement is an 18 credit hour program. The Bilingual endorsement is an 18 credit hour program.

If I am currently teaching and I have English Language Learners in my classroom, can I complete my internship in my own classroom?

Yes. You will need to have a minimum of 5 English Language Learners for an ESOL endorsement. For the Bilingual endorsement, you need to be teaching in a two-way bilingual classroom and you must complete a work sample with lessons and reflections written in Spanish.

Do I have to take any teacher exams?

Yes. The following gives the required exams for these endorsements:

Required for the ESOL Endorsement
  • Teaching English as a Second Language Praxis test (test code 20360)
Required for the Bilingual Endorsement:
  • Praxis II Specialty Test in Target Language-
    Spanish Content Knowledge (test code 10191); Productive Language Skills (test code 20192)
  • Teaching English as a Second Language Praxis test (test code 20360)

What are the admission and completion requirements?

Admission requirements include:

For the ESOL Endorsement
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • A teaching license (K-12) or current enrollment in a licensure program
  • Completion of an ESOL/Bilingual endorsement application
For the Bilingual Endorsement
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in a second language (Spanish)
  • A teaching license (K-12) or current enrollment in a licensure program
  • Completion of an ESOL/Bilingual endorsement application

Completion requirements include:

For the ESOL Endorsement
  • 15 credits of coursework
  • 3 credits of internship (for ESOL endorsement)
  • Teacher exams
For the Bilingual Endorsement
  • 15 credits of coursework
  • 3 credits of practicum (for Bilingual endorsement)
  • Teacher exams
Please note that it is highly recommended that those applying for the ESOL endorsement have a minimum of 2 years of college level foreign language study. Those applying for the Bilingual endorsement must have Spanish language proficiency at the Advanced or Superior level.
