Early Childhood/Elementary Education Program Application and Admission Information


Elementary students Winter 2005To apply to the Early Childhood/Elementary Education Initial Teacher Licensure Program, students must make application to the College of Education (COEd) and OSU's Graduate School. Admission is selective and competitive, and experience working in a diverse setting is highly recommended. Not all applicants are admitted.

Applications for the 2008-2009 "Immersion" Cohort that begins in the Summer Term 2008 (August 18 start date) will be accepted between November 2007-July 2008. Applications will be open until all slots are filled with qualified applicants. Apply by the first week in February for scholarship consideration.

The "Elementary Education 2 Year Part-Time Program" is now closed for the 2007-2009 academic year. Applications will be available on this web page, no later then October 31, 2008. Applications for the 2009-2010 program will be accepted between November 2008-January 2009. Deadline for application to be determined.

Requirements for admission consideration to the program:

  • Completed bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum grade-point average of 3.0 in the last 90 quarter hours of graded undergraduate work and all work completed thereafter
  • Submit two complete copies of your application materials
  • Competence in subject matter as defined in Form B
  • Successful experience in working with school-age children or youth at the early childhood/elementary level (preferably in a public school) verified by a recommendation or evaluation
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communication
  • Sincere and appropriate desire to become a public school teacher and an understanding of the demands placed on a teacher
  • Satisfactory answers to "good conduct" questions as required by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission

In addition to applying to the COEd, you need to submit an application to the Graduate School at OSU. This application can be requested by calling the Admissions Office at 541-737-4411 or by visiting their web site at http://oregonstate/admissions/.

Students do not have to pass the required CBEST and MSAT tests before applying to the program. However, all students must pass the required tests prior to their winter student teaching experience.

The program starts in late August and ends at the end of spring term. Students may finish their masters degree program in the following summer.
