Application Information for Prospective Students in Counseling


Students immerse themselves in play therapy

The Counseling Academic Unit offers two graduate degree programs via Ecampus (http://ecampus.oregonstate.edu/about/). This unit has offered graduate courses via Ecampus since 1944 and full graduate degrees via Ecampus since 1976. A traditional on-campus master’s with a major in counseling is offered via OSU’s Cascades branch campus.

The two degree programs are as follows:

MS: Summer Sequential Hybrid School Counseling Program. This program leads to a MS degree with a major in counseling. Degree graduates are eligible for licensure as a school counselor from TSPC. The program is offered in a hybrid format (i.e., a mixture of in-class, synchronous web, and asynchronous web instruction). The in-class portion takes place two weekends each quarter in Salem, OR. The synchronous web takes place weekly on Monday and/or Wednesday evenings. The asynchronous web components occur via Blackboard. Admissions to this program are temporarily suspended.

PhD: Hybrid Counseling Program. This program leads to a PhD degree with a major in counseling. The program is offered in a hybrid format (i.e., a mixture of in-class, synchronous web, and asynchronous web instruction). The in-class portion takes place two weekends each quarter in Wilsonville, OR. The synchronous web portion takes place weekly on Monday and/or Wednesday evenings. The asynchronous web components occur via Blackboard.

Admissions Process and Criteria for Admission:

All Candidates

Admission to the program is by concurrent application to the: (1) Oregon State University Graduate School and (2) Counseling Academic Unit of the College of Education. Admission requirements for the Oregon State University Graduate School may be found at http://oregonstate.edu/admissions/graduate/requirements.html. To guarantee consideration, a completed application packet must be received no later than January 31st of the year for which one is applying for admission. Applications received after Ferbruary 1st may be considered for admission depending on space. Please refer to the application checklists for the steps to take in making an application.

Master’s Candidates (MS with a Major in Counseling)

The minimal prerequisite is a baccalaureate degree. Academic background, personal and emotional suitability, volunteer or paid experience in the helping professions, and the educational and professional goals of each candidate are evaluated before admission is granted. Screening includes, but is not limited to, a minimum GPA of 3.0 on the last 90 hours of undergraduate and graduate work, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample. A personal interview is required for those applicants who meet the initial application criteria. For more information, please consult the Master’s Handbook.

Doctoral Candidates (PhD with a Major in Counseling)

The minimal prerequisite is a master’s degree in counseling or a related field. Academic background, personal and emotional suitability, volunteer or paid experience in the helping professions, and the educational and professional goals of each candidate are evaluated before admission is granted. Screening includes, but is not limited to, a minimum GPA of 3.0 on the last 90 hours of undergraduate and graduate work, three letters of recommendation including one from a recent or current clinical supervisor, and a writing sample. Applicants who meet the initial application criteria are screened and top candidates are invited for in-person interviews.
