Jean began her higher education journey with a major in art and a minor in psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. Moving north, she obtained a teaching license and raised three children. She and her forester husband live near Stayton and enjoy visits from their grandchildren. Jean received a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Oregon and her doctorate from OSU with a dissertation titled "My Journey with Preservice Teachers: Reflecting on Teacher Characteristics that Bridge Multicultural Education Theory and Classroom Practice."

Such bridging continues to be her research and teaching focus and passion; she has published a book with Jerry Diller, Cultural Competence: A Primer for Educators. For additional information and links on cultural competence please go to: http://culturalcompetence.blogs.com/. Jean also welcomes people to preview the course she teaches with her daughter, Racial and Cultural Harmony in the K-12 Classroom. For a challenge, try this: http://www.tolerance.org/hidden_bias/index.html.

For fun (?) Jean runs, jumps, and throws things at masters events in the summer and participates in ski patrol in the winter: http://www.santiampassskipatrol.org/intropg1.html.
