Endowment to benefit Education Double Degree Students

“My desire is to demonstrate my abiding love and pride in my
home state, Oregon, and the never-ending gratitude that I feel
toward my alma mater for providing me with the opportunity
to earn a university education and degree.” Daniel Hearn, BS
’70 Industrial Arts Education, demonstrated this appreciation
and more when he and his wife Gloria contributed $50,000 to
establish an endowed scholarship for students in education.
The William and Ella Hearn Endowed Scholarship will be
awarded to Education Double Degree students preparing to
teach technology education. According to Dean Sam Stern,
“It’s remarkable that in this first year, we have more than 400
students taking the introductory courses for the new undergraduate
Education Double Degree.
“The Hearn’s generous gift and
Daniel’s leadership as Chair our new
Development Council are excellent
examples of a new level of support
for the new School of Education.”

Students earn a degree in their chosen field and
another in education, enabling them to
teach right after graduation. We have
students majoring in the high need areas
of math, science and technology who, because
of this generous gift, will be able
to earn the second degree. I hope other
donors will step forward to help support these talented students
who want to become teachers.”
“My parents were advocates of higher education believing
it was the key to a better future and opportunity to contribute
to our democracy so we honored them with college scholarship endowments at our undergraduate
schools,” Daniel said. “We hope this scholarship will serve as a living memorial
to our parents who did not have the opportunity to seek higher education during
their youth. I have had great fulfillment in my life
and it is due in no small way to my education at OSU and
experience as a living group leader. I give thanks to all the
dedicated instructors and professors whose words and
shared thoughts continue to provide me with inspiration
and guidance.”
Daniel retired in 1993 as Lieutenant Colonel after an Army
career in Military Intelligence culminating in a Department
Level Army Staff assignment in the Pentagon where he was
responsible for the Army’s Electronic Warfare Program and
was selected as Secretary of the Army, Outstanding Military
Employee of the Year for 1992 – Pentagon. He is founder and
president of CH Enterprises, Inc. in Boulder City, Nevada,
specializing in engineering support activities related to electromagnetic
spectrum technologies. Daniel and Gloria’s son,
Jonathan, recently graduated from USC in Economics as a
Presidential Scholar. Also OSU graduates are daughter, Jennifer
MS Ed ’96 and her husband, Peter Matzka, PhD ’03 Forestry
Management and professor at Humbolt State University.
Education alum heads new Development Council
“Education is our most important task as a nation. It is the
foundation for all that we will accomplish,” believes Daniel
Hearn, BS ’70 Industrial Arts Education and Chair of the
newly formed School of Education Development Council.
The Council met earlier this year and began to map out the
mission, goals, and operations for the Council. “This is an energetic,
creative group of alums and friends of the new School
of Education and we’re excited to be helping to chart the future
of our newly-reestablished school,” said Hearn. “Our future
looks particularly bright with the leadership of Sam Stern
and the support of President Ray.”
The working mission of the Council is to Accelerate the development
of the new School of Education through a deliberate
