On October 19, 1902, more than a thousand people gathered in Corvallis to dedicate our building. They celebrated their commitment to the relatively new college that has since grown to become a major land-grant university with more than 19,000 students who come from all 50 states and more than 80 countries. Our building was a physical manifestation of their vision of the future. Over this past century, it has been a home for much of the university, including agriculture, science, pharmacy, forestry, psychology, and, for more than half of its history, education.

With the appropriation of state funding in support of the refurbishment of Education Hall, we have a remarkable once-in-a-hundred-year opportunity to recreate this beautiful old building so that it can meet the needs of students, faculty, and staff for the century to come. In doing so, we have a chance to honor our history and create new spaces for the future. I can think of few other opportunities that have such clear potential to touch each one of us and so many others.

The state funding represents about 60% of the estimated total costs of refurbishment. I’m confident that with the help of our alumni and friends we’ll be able to raise the additional funds needed to take the fence down and prepare Education Hall for at least another hundred years.

Having been a member of the faculty of education here at Oregon State University for the past twenty-five years, I have a great appreciation for the “spirit” of our building and am deeply committed to its history and future. In the words of Corvallis Mayor, Helen Berg, who proclaimed October 19, 2002 to be the Spirit of Education Hall Day, “…in the expectation that the tremendous spirit of support of education that dedicated this building a century ago will persist unto the realization of exciting visions in the future.”

I continue to enjoy visiting with alumni and the growing number of friends of our College. Please feel free to contact me by email at sam.stern@oregonstate.edu or by phone at 541-737-6392. I’d like to know about you, and especially any memories of Education Hall you’d like to share.
