A Message From the Dean
Dean Sam Stern with son, David, in Japan
|
Much of this issue is concerned with culture. Culture
does matter – to all of us and to teaching and
learning at all levels. Our faculty are deeply committed
to issues of culture and diversity, and you
can see evidence of their commitment in all aspects of
their work.
In this issue of Connections, you'll learn about our exciting
project with Pakistani teacher educators, a project that’s
contributing to greater cultural understanding for all of us.
I'm particularly pleased that through this effort, we’re
partnering with many other OSU units, including the English
Language Institute, Department of Science and Mathematics
Education, and SMILE (Science and Mathematics Investigative
Learning Experiences). Also in this issue, you’ll meet
two of our visiting scholars, who come to us from Korea and
Taiwan. And, you’ll learn about a new book on cultural competence
by one of our faculty and learn how our alums are
working to make the world a better place.
In this issue, you’ll learn about a generous estate gift from
Forrest and Susan Lindsay who want to assure that there will
be support for talented students who choose to become
teachers. We very much appreciate their gift and know
that support from our alums and friends is more important
than ever.
Earlier this fall, I had a chance to give a talk on our innovative
Education Double Degree at the Japan – U.S. Teacher
Education Consortium and, while in Japan, was able to visit
my son, David, who is an exchange student at Waseda University
in Tokyo. I’m always glad to talk about our new Education
Double Degree and pleased to know that our new
approach to teacher education is attracting attention from
both Japanese and American teacher educators. And, I’m
very glad that David has this opportunity to broaden his
perspectives on the world and other cultures.
I’m proud of the work our School of Education does to promote cultural competence and diversity. It’s through this
work that we can further learning and prepare for a world of
possibilities.
