The April 26, 2008 College of Education Scholarship Reception honored nearly 40 talented students with more than $50,000 in scholarships and awards. College of Education students’ future careers and lives have been enhanced and their hard work and talents recognized, thanks to the generosity of our donors.
Friends, families, and faculty joined in the celebration and reception in the stately Memorial Union on campus, sharing in the joy of the afternoon. Several donors were able to join in the festivities and congratulate their recipients in person, a heart-felt experience for both donors and students.
The afternoon began with a welcome from Dean Sam Stern and brief remarks by Gene Compton Newburgh, Director of Student Services for the college. Student ambassadors Michelle Connors and Carly Norman narrated the program, giving background on the purpose and background of each scholarship and award.
The College of Education Scholarships were awarded to: Malia Arenth, Rene McKenzie, Jennifer Moniz, Kathleen Normandin, Giustina Pelosi, Dan Pilver, and Julie Suchanek; these scholarships were established to support students in the College of Education who are earning degrees or licensure in teaching, counseling, or educational leadership. The fund is supported by gifts from a number of donors.
The College of Education Graduate Fellowship which is also supported from a combination of donors was award to Meghan Cok for the 2008-2009 school year.
Presentation of the Chaplin-Rieke Memorial Scholarship to Julie Suchanek was first on the agenda. The Chaplin-Rieke Memorial Scholarship was established to honor a post-baccalaureate student pursuing teacher certification.
The student honored with the Clayton Dart Scholarship this year is Ben Stewart. This scholarship was created as financial assistance for selected undergraduate and graduate education students.
The S. David and Carol Eves Scholarship was established in 1999 and supports students interested in pursuing a degree in education. This year’s recipient is Erin Harrington.
Kaisa Laukkanen was awarded the Karen and Sarah Graves Memorial Scholarship which provides support for full-time graduate students planning to teach young children.
Avelino Solomon is the recipient of the Ron and Marguerite Hagen Scholarship honoring students who couple a track in business with education.
The Ella P. Hill and William W. Hearn Endowed Scholarship was created to commemorate the lives of the parents of Daniel Hearn with hopes that the memory of this dedicated and hard-working couple will be shared by future generations. The 2008 recipient is Simon Merila.
Sequoia Star is the recipient of the Scott Henderson Memorial Scholarship which was established in 1990 to endow a fund for students seeking Master’s degrees in post-secondary education.
The Elwood J. Keema Scholarship was awarded to Jason Wood this year. It was created to help students pursue their degrees in education.
The Matthew and Frances Krajl Scholarship was awarded for the first time this year. Created by their son and his wife to honor the couple, this scholarship was awarded to Robi Nelson.
The Herbert R. Laslett Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Brittany Jackson. This award was established to provide financial assistance to undergraduate students pursuing teacher education progams at OSU.
The Denabelle Linville Scholarship Fund was established in 1973 as a perpetual endowment to benefit students at OSU who intend to pursue a teaching career. Mrs. Linville was a graduate of the class of 1925 and wished to support the studies of women who are Oregon residents. This year’s recipients are: Carmen Atkins, Cara Benfield, Shannon Biederman, Jennifer Hill, Angela Little, Kathleen McDonnell, Megan Nelson, Tiffany Schaffer, Courtney Tipton, Christy Toliver, and Kathryn Walker.
This year’s recipient of the Janet and Ron May Merit Scholarship is D. Claire Oliveros. This award is presented annually to individuals interested in Adult Education and who exhibit skill in community service and leadership along with academic excellence.
2008’s recipient of the Herman and Lois Miller Scholarship was Molly Miller. This fund was established in 1988 by Marilyn Shelburne, the Miller’s daughter, who says, “My parents were both dedicated teachers and we are grateful we can reward and encourage undergraduate or graduate students preparing to teach.”
There are five recipients of this year’s Arizona Sawyers Scholarship: Karen Barrese, Katie Eisiminger, Erin Harrington, Erin Heath, and Brittany Jackson. Established in 1971 by Denabelle Linville, the scholarship supports women who are Oregon residents and planning a career in teaching.
Mona Beach-Bernardi is this year’s recipient of the Teacher Education Scholarship. Created through the generosity of Dr. Nora Cohen, faculty member in the College of Education, this honor is presented each year to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student training to be a teacher and with high scholastic achievement. Nora was present to award and congratulate Mona.
The Fred Thompson Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year to a doctoral student. In 2008, Michael Royer was selected as the recipient. Mr. Thompson was born in Utah and moved to Oregon as a young man. He was a Portland Public School custodian for most of his working life and, although he did not attend college himself, he believed deeply in the value of teaching and education.
This is the fourth year that the Kate Van Leuven CSSA Award has been presented to a graduate student in the College Students Services Administration program. The award memorializes the life of Kate Van Leuven and was established by her parents and grandparents. The recipient this year is Lillian Read.
The Jaquelin Springer-Burrill Golden Apple Award was presented in 2008 to Melissa Pritchard. The Springer-Burrill family established this scholarship in 1995 as a memorial to Jaquelin, a dedicated teacher for 16 years, whose motto was, “Children learn what they live.” Jacquelin’s daughter, Carrie Foshee, shared stories about her mother and honored Melissa with the award, as well as some of the necessities of teaching.
The award conferral was followed by a reception, allowing the attendees plenty of time to extend congratulations and visit.
