On Friday March 8, 2002, I wrote a short note to all faculty and staff, describing the experiences of my first week as Dean. Since then, it's become somewhat of a ritual, a chance to share reflections on the week, a way to stay in touch. A certain symmetry...
Hi All,
Given the economic news of the day, there seemed to be a certain symmetry in my meeting in the woods by the Oregon coast at the site of a 1930’s Civilian Conservation Camp, now the Angell Job Corps Center. One of 122 job corps centers, the Angell Center provides technical education and GED preparation for about 200 young men and women who for a variety of reasons, have not completed high school. During our lunch (prepared by the culinary arts students), I sat next to a young man in the bricklayer program. Without hesitation, he told me that he had been in a lot of trouble in his past, but was glad to be completing his technical training and GED, and looking forward to building things. Sounds like a growth opportunity to me…
