Maritime College, Marine
Resource Management - certificate program; "The
MBA for a new millennium" - "An innovative and
flexible program for the busy professional working in, or intending to
enter a career in one of the many areas of modern marine resource
management."; has a foundation in a traditional MBA, but can be
focused in such management specialisations as Environmental, Coastal,
Offshore Resources, Fisheries, Seafood, Aquatic, Coastal Tourism and
Eco-tourism as well as Aquatic Resources Administration
-see overview; offers several short
courses/workshops, .(Note: the
curriculum includes some business type courses - eg. organizational
behavior, but not really comparable to a standard MBA; however, the
concept could be expanded to a full grad. degree program, depending on
goals and needs for training;good way to improve the
administrative and leadership skills of professionals through a more
structured, continuing ed. type program - comparable to
executive training in business?)
- Certificate program
includes...
- Fisheries
Management - ideal for people
currently employed in government, industry or stakeholder
organisation wishing to gain further exposure to fisheries
management. People wishing to enter this challenging and worthwhile
area can gain the practical and theoretical background required for
a career in fisheries management; structured so as to provide
participants with a sound technical footing through the Graduate
Certificate in Fisheries Management and an exposure to the related
administrative and management issues in the Graduate Diploma in
Fisheries Management.
- Seafood
Management - structured to provide participants with the
technical, policy and legal background for a management role in the
post harvest sector of the seafood industry. Seafood quality and
safety are major issues facing the seafood industry. Recent changes
to food safety laws and provisions of the Trade Practices Act place
increasing responsibility for the quality and safety of food on the
seafood production and distribution chain.
- Aquaculture
Management - provides students with the only aquaculture
management program available in Oceania. We expose participants to
the contemporary issues in aquaculture development from a public
policy and administrative viewpoint in an international and domestic
context; introduces the issues, delineates the causes and their
effects, and explores solutions through exposure to current
international and domestic government policy and administrative
processes.
- **Memorial University of Newfoundland,
Fisheries and Marine Institute
- Fish development diploma
- for those already employed in various sectors
or agencies of the fishing industry as well as university graduates seeking a
specialization in fisheries development. It is intended to strengthen management skills
and broaden the perspective of students to include all three sectors of the fishing
industry: aquaculture, harvesting, and processing. Graduation may lead to higher job
classification and promotion or new employment within the industry as well as within
various government and non-government agencies; skills
will complement, rather than replace, the in-depth knowledge of
specialists in the natural or social sciences. (courses
appear to be similar to Master of Marine Studies, but lower
level)
- specifically designed to:
- train well-rounded
fisheries generalists with an in-depth knowledge in
fisheries development
- teach management skills
specifically suited to the fishing industry
- Master
of Marine Studies - Fisheries Resource Management
The master of marine studies (fisheries resource management)
degree is a multi-disciplinary program of study designed to
provide exposure to all dimensions of modern fisheries
resource management. It
will be of interest to recent graduates seeking to improve
employment prospects within government, consulting companies or
commercial enterprises; skilled specialists moving toward
management responsibilities, and individuals seeking a broadly
based education in resource management. (this
could be considered continuing education)

- *UNU
Fisheries Training Programme in Iceland-
focus on developing countries
- World fisheries are on the verge
of becoming another natural resource disaster.
Over-capitalization of the world's fishing fleet led to
over-exploitation of fishery resources. This situation created
new demands of high professional standards in a large number of
fisheries skills, particularly in the developing world. In order
to meet the growing need of developing countries in this area,
the United Nations University, the Government of Iceland and the
Marine Research Institute of Iceland have concluded in June 1997
an agreement of cooperation for the establishment of the UNU
Fisheries Training Programme in Iceland. Under the programme, a
six-month training course is organized annually with the
financial support of the Government of Iceland which has also
been providing support for the highly successful UNU Geothermal
Training Programme since 1979. The programme which is intended
to strengthen the capabilities of governments, universities,
research and training institutions of developing countries
in the area of fisheries is based on the recommendations of
feasibility studies carried out under the auspices of the UNU
and the Government of Iceland.
- The UNU Fisheries Training
Programme offers training
in fisheries research and development at post-graduate level.
The areas covered are (1) Fisheries Policy and Planning; (2)
Marine Resources, Assessment and Monitoring; (3) Fishing
Technology and Fleet Operations; (4) Fish Handling, Processing
and Quality Management; (5) Management of Fisheries Companies
and Marketing; (6) Inland Waters and Aquaculture; and (7)
Environmental Protection and Monitoring.

reserve develops workshops that address priority coastal resource
issues and target relevant audiences. Programs are developed in a
variety of formats, ranging from seminars, hands-on skill training and
participatory workshops to lectures and technology demonstrations.
Participants benefit from opportunities to share experiences and
network in a multidisciplinary setting, often with a reserve-based
field activity. Topical areas relate to coastal habitat conservation
and restoration, biodiversity, water quality and sustainable resource
management.

Resources Leadership Institute
- The goal of the North Carolina Natural Resources Leadership
Institute is to develop leaders who can build consensus around
contentious issues and move beyond conflict to find solutions. By
applying the skills learned in the program, Institute graduates can
become more effective in working with other people in their jobs,
organizations, and communities. The Institute is part of the North
Carolina Cooperative Extension Service at North Carolina State
University. NC State
faculty from the Departments of Forestry,
Agricultural and Resource Economics, and Extension
Administration, and faculty from the Institute of Government at
UNC-Chapel Hill, have planned and developed the curriculum,
and coordinate the Institute programs. An
advisory board representing
industry, environment, government, and education provides overall
guidance to the Institute. The resources and staff of the
University are an integral part of the Institute. The program is
structured around six three-day workshop
sessions, and a year-long
practicum. The Institute draws from NC State faculty,
and experts from other universities, state and federal government
agencies, dispute mediation practitioners, and other natural
resource professionals to lead the workshop sessions. The Institute
emphasizes hands-on training techniques where participants can
practice the skills presented in the classroom.Participants also
will travel to Washington, D.C. where they will have the opportunity
to discuss natural resource issues and policy with government
representatives, lobbyists, and leaders of non-government
organizations. Participants also can become acquainted with
individuals working with and within federal government on issues
related to their practicum topics.
