Seafood quality and safety are major issues facing the seafood industry. Recent changes to food safety laws and provisions of the Trade Practices Act place increasing responsibility for the quality and safety of food on the seafood production and distribution chain.
      • Aquaculture Management - provides students with the only aquaculture management program available in Oceania. We expose participants to the contemporary issues in aquaculture development from a public policy and administrative viewpoint in an international and domestic context; introduces the issues, delineates the causes and their effects, and explores solutions through exposure to current international and domestic government policy and administrative processes.

    • The location of the Coastal Zone Institute (CZI), established under the aegis of University College Cork (UCC), arises from a strong traditional base of research and expertise in coastal studies.   • CARICOM Fisheries Unit - The CARICOM Fisheries Unit (CFU), located in Belize, was established in 1991 to execute the "CARICOM Fisheries Resource Assessment and Management Program" (CFRAMP). This program is a sustainable development initiative of the twelve English-speaking member states of CARICOM. 
  • IAC  Wageningen, the Netherlands -  The International Agricultural Centre (IAC) - Wageningen, the Netherlands is an independent non-profit foundation affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries. The IAC is an internationally oriented institute that acts as a platform for exchange and transfer of applied knowledge on sustainable management of renewable natural resources. It provides training, advisory and information management services directed towards developing countries and countries in transition. The IAC undertakes a wide range of training activities in the Netherlands and in countries around the world. These activities include a comprehensive programme of regular courses in Wageningen, tailor-made courses, individual study programmes, and refresher courses. IAC has long-standing links with training institutes in the Netherlands and in other countries. The centre participates in joint projects to support and strengthen the training capacities of a number of institutes in developing countries.
  • ICLARM (International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management) - The World Fish Center is an autonomous, nongovernmental, nonprofit, international scientific and technical center which has been organized to conduct, stimulate and accelerate research on all aspects of fisheries and other living aquatic resources. - research, outreach and extension
  • Institute for Fisheries Management and Coastal Community Development (Denmark) - The primary objective of the Institute for Fisheries Management & Coastal Community Development (IFM) is to undertake research on socio-economic and institutional aspects of fisheries management and development in coastal communities. A secondary objective is the delivery of advisory services to national and international public authorities, institutions and organizations in both the industrialized world and the developing countries. The institute is internationally orientated, but also deals with local and national Danish problems.   • *Institute of Fisheries Management (IFM) - The Institute of Fisheries Management (IFM) is an international organisation of persons sharing common interest in the modern management of recreational and commercial fisheries. Created in 1969 in the UK, the IFM is dedicated to the advancement of fisheries management in all forms.It is a non-profit making organisation controlled by the membership and governed by an elected council. The Institute organises correspondence courses leading to Certificates in Fisheries Management and in Fish Farming, and to a Diploma in Fisheries Management. These qualifications are recognised by many employers and entitle their holder to professional status within the Institute.
  • Memorial University, Newfoundland - Marine Institute International - the focal point for the international activities of the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland (the Marine Institute). Through MI International, the Marine Institute participates in international projects and internationalization activities around the world and at home.
  • NETTLAP - UNEP Network for Environmental Training at Tertiary-Level In Asia and the Pacific;

    • The NETTLAP Training and Resources Development Workshops: The objective of the NETTLAP Training and Resources Development Workshops (TRDWs) is to identify and develop methods, tools and materials applicable for use in environmental education, training and awareness programmes conducted by staff in tertiary institutions. The intention is to strengthen the ability of staff in tertiary institutions of the Asia-Pacific region, and the South and Central Asian sub-region in particular, to impart knowledge and skills to achieve substantial and/or multiple use of resources in a rational and coordinated manner in order to minimise impacts and facilitate ecologically, economically and socially sound and sustainable uses of those resources.
  • *UNU Fisheries Training Programme in Iceland- focus on developing countries
    • World fisheries are on the verge of becoming another natural resource disaster. Over-capitalization of the world's fishing fleet led to over-exploitation of fishery resources. This situation created new demands of high professional standards in a large number of fisheries skills, particularly in the developing world. In order to meet the growing need of developing countries in this area, the United Nations University, the Government of Iceland and the Marine Research Institute of Iceland have concluded in June 1997 an agreement of cooperation for the establishment of the UNU Fisheries Training Programme in Iceland. Under the programme, a six-month training course is organized annually with the financial support of the Government of Iceland which has also been providing support for the highly successful UNU Geothermal Training Programme since 1979. The programme which is intended to strengthen the capabilities of governments, universities, research and training institutions of developing countries in the area of fisheries is based on the recommendations of feasibility studies carried out under the auspices of the UNU and the Government of Iceland.
    • The UNU Fisheries Training Programme offers training in fisheries research and development at post-graduate level. The areas covered are (1) Fisheries Policy and Planning; (2) Marine Resources, Assessment and Monitoring; (3) Fishing Technology and Fleet Operations; (4) Fish Handling, Processing and Quality Management; (5) Management of Fisheries Companies and Marketing; (6) Inland Waters and Aquaculture; and (7) Environmental Protection and Monitoring.

  • Australian Fisheries Academy - The Australian Fisheries Academy, based at Port Adelaide in South Australia, provides a central training base for state, national and international industry members. The role of the Australian Fisheries Academy is to underpin the development of the seafood industry of South Australia and to assist the development of the seafood industry at national level. It provides new training opportunities for international students. Through education and research, the Academy provides a highly and specifically trained human resource and information resource to enable the seafood industry to meet the challenges of the future - primarily training of fishers....one of courses is Diploma in Fisheries Compliance Management (what is this?)

  • North Atlantic Fisheries College - Located in the Shetland Islands, at the centre of the northern European fishing grounds is the North Atlantic Fisheries College, an industry managed institute dedicated to supporting the development of the fisheries industry. The College is a centrepiece of the Shetland Islands Council’s strategy to secure the future of this important local industry, but is also developing a national and international reputation as a centre for fisheries training and development. The College offers a wide range of vocational training courses in Maritime Studies, Marine Engineering, Fish Processing, Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, Fisheries Business Studies, and miscellaneous subjects, ranging in length from one day to a full academic year. see NAFC Training Courses (they do offer an MSc in fisheries science and technology)

  • ***Secretariat of the Pacific Community - Coastal Fisheries Program
    • Fisheries Training Section focuses on the commercial sector of Pacific Island countries and territories. This sector is interpreted in its broadest sense and includes small-scale fishing operators as well as industrial fisheries enterprises. Assistance and training is provided in areas including the transfer of fisheries-related skills; co-ordination of fisheries training opportunities; promotion of the exchange of relevant information on fisheries training and education; assistance in effective planning and implementing of human resource development and training programmes; and the development and implementation of training programmes not readily available through established training institutions, in particular, vocational and hands-on training in areas such as enterprise management, safety at sea, seafood quality management and aquaculture. In addition to its activities targeting the commercial sector, the Section also works closely with fisheries administrations and national fisheries training institutions. The Section’s training activities may be implemented at regional level (workshops, seminars or training courses) or in-country.     • Understanding Fisheries Management - A Manual for Understanding the Federal Fisheries Management Process, Including Analysis of the 1996 Sustainable Fisheries Act. Published by Mississippie-Alabama Sea Grant Legal Program and Auburn University Marine Estension and Research Center. (this is the PDF version which is a little blurry).  
    • Fisheries Management page - this is an example of extension outreach material that can assist with educating stakeholders or other decision-makers unfamiliar with Fisheries policy.
  • Coastal Decisionmaker Workshops - National Estuarine Research Reserve System Through Coastal Decisionmaker Workshops, reserves provide up-to-date scientific information for elected officials, land-use planners, regulators, natural resource managers and private citizens who wish to make informed decisions about the nation's coasts and estuaries. Each reserve develops workshops that address priority coastal resource issues and target relevant audiences. Programs are developed in a variety of formats, ranging from seminars, hands-on skill training and participatory workshops to lectures and technology demonstrations. Participants benefit from opportunities to share experiences and network in a multidisciplinary setting, often with a reserve-based field activity. Topical areas relate to coastal habitat conservation and restoration, biodiversity, water quality and sustainable resource management.

  • *Natural Resources Leadership Institute - The goal of the North Carolina Natural Resources Leadership Institute is to develop leaders who can build consensus around contentious issues and move beyond conflict to find solutions. By applying the skills learned in the program, Institute graduates can become more effective in working with other people in their jobs, organizations, and communities. The Institute is part of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service at North Carolina State University. NC State faculty from the Departments of Forestry,  Agricultural and Resource Economics, and Extension Administration,and faculty from the Institute of Government at UNC-Chapel Hill,   have planned and developed the curriculum, and coordinate the Institute programs. An advisory board representing industry, environment, government, and education provides overall guidance to the Institute.  The resources and staff of the University are an integral part of the Institute. The program is structured around six three-day workshop sessions, and a year-long practicum. The Institute draws from NC State faculty, and experts from other universities, state and federal government agencies, dispute mediation practitioners, and other natural resource professionals to lead the workshop sessions. The Institute emphasizes hands-on training techniques where participants can practice the skills presented in the classroom.Participants also will travel to Washington, D.C. where they will have the opportunity to discuss natural resource issues and policy with government representatives, lobbyists, and leaders of non-government organizations. Participants also can become acquainted with individuals working with and within federal government on issues related to their practicum topics.
  • *Pinchot Institute for Conservation - Has program in  Forest Supervisors Leadership Program - Effective natural resource conservation begins with effective leaders. Through leadership workshops and professional development seminars that are based on participatory decision models offered at Grey Towers National Historic Landmark, the Institute helps beginning and mid-career professionals in public agencies, private organizations and conservation NGOs redefine the relationship between land management agencies and the communities they serve - see about the program - this is connected with the USDA Forest Service

    • Habitat Evaluation Procedure Courses:
      Pertain to a state-of-the-art technique for habitat-based impact assessment and resource management for both aquatic and terrestrial systems. One HEP courses (HEP 500, Habitat Evaluation Procedures) is sponsored by Virginia Tech (abbreviated here as VT) Department of Fisheries and Wildlife Science through a cooperative agreement with MESC, BRD.  
    • Instream Flow Incremental Methodology Courses:
      The IFIM courses are currently limited to a video overview and two correspondence courses that address the select  components of the impact assessment and management tool for riverine resource management. 
    • Managing Environmental Conflict Courses:
      Develop negotiation and decision making skills used in the social/legal/institutional arena of natural resource issues. These courses may be available upon request in 1998 through MESC, USGS Biological Resources Division. 
  • Wageningen University and Research Center
    • Foundation for Postgraduate Continuing Education (PHLO), which includes the International Training Centre, was established in 1972 by Wageningen University, the Association of Alumni of Wageningen University and the Royal Society of Agricultural Sciences. The PHLO Foundation is the largest centre for postgraduate continuing education at Wageningen University and Research Centre. It gives about 30 short courses a year, including several international ones in English, on a great variety of subjects ranging from applied statistics and water resources management to animal nutrition and agricultural policy.
    • *International Agricultural Centre (IAC) undertakes a wide range of training activities in the Netherlands and in countries around the world. These activities include a comprehensive programme of regular courses in Wageningen, tailor-made courses, individual study programmes, and refresher courses. Focusing on rural development and natural resources management, the IAC training programme is designed for mid-career professionals occupying key positions in public or private organisations. University and college lecturers are also eligible for participation in specific courses, as are subject matter specialists working in extension services. The primary programme objective is to strengthen local competence and expertise in the participants' home countries by disseminating applied knowledge and skills with regard to agriculture, rural development and the management of natural resources.
