Training Managers for 21st Century Fisheries

An international cooperative initiative designed to facilitate production of human capital necessary to meet 21st century fisheries management challenges.

Case Training Initiative

The Training Managers for 21st Century Fisheries initiative has identified the use of the field researched, decision-focused case teaching method as a potentially powerful and effective technique in the training of fishery managers and decision-makers. Decision-focused case teaching method, used extensively by business management and other competitive professions, promises an effective means to enhance knowledge while developing abilities in applied integrative decision-making skills among fisheries management professionals, stakeholders involved in management, and students. However, decision-focused case method is rarely used in fisheries management curricula due to inexperience of educators and lack of appropriately designed cases.

FAO/SIFAR has also been developing case study approaches and methodologies recognizing the potentially key role of these in lesson-learning and in informing practical approaches to more effective management.
