Partial linear models provide good compromises between linear models and nonparametric models. How to determine which covariates have linear effects and which have nonlinear effects is a fundamental and theoretically challenging problem in multiple regression. Most existing methods in practice are largely ad hoc and lack theoretical justifications.

In this work, we tackle the structure selection problem from a new perspective of model selection. A unified regularization framework in reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) is developed to automatically distinguish linearity and nonlinearity of the covariates, and at the same time estimate their effects.

We show that the new estimator can discover the underlying true model structure correctly as the sample size goes to infinity. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the performance of the new procedure.

Next Science Pub, May 13, 2013 The Science of Nutrition: The Pauling Legacy and Current Research

Speakers: Steve Lawson and Chris Petersen, Oregon State University

The potential health benefit of Vitamin C may be Linus Pauling’s most famous legacy. However, among scientists, the Oregon native and two-time Nobel Prize winner is better known for deep insights into chemistry and its application to medicine.

At the May 13 Corvallis Science Pub, two speakers — Chris Petersen of the Special Collections and Archives Research Center in the Valley Library and Steve Lawson, administrative officer at the Linus Pauling Institute — will present little known highlights of Pauling’s life and an update on how scientists at the institute are applying his findings today. The institute is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Petersen authors The Pauling Blog and has overseen production of websites and videos that describe Pauling’s lifelong research. He’ll reflect on Pauling’s life as a college student in Corvallis, his years at Caltech, his work on sickle cell anemia and his tireless campaign for world peace.

Lawson has been associated with the Institute since 1977 when it was located in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has contributed to the institute’s financial and scientific management and was a research colleague of Pauling’s, focusing on topics as diverse as vitamin C and cancer and superconductivity. He’ll discuss Pauling’s development of the concept of “orthomolecular medicine” as well as major areas of current research in areas such as vitamin D, cancer and the aging process.

Harry Potter and Christianity

Mon, 05/13/2013 - 2:13pm
Monday, May 13, 2013 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

When the Harry Potter series first appeared, some American audiences assumed that the books were anti-Christian.  Such a sentiment became impossible to sustain after the publication of the last book in the series, which quotes verses from the New Testament at important points.

Interpreting Rowling’s use of those verses through the lens of her treatment of death throughout the series, Kavka (who taught the first large classes at a public university on Harry Potter and religion in the US) will argue that Rowling offers her readers a more worldly and life-affirming sort of Christianity than previous British fantasy literature had provided.

Publication Party for "Ellie's Log"

Mon, 05/13/2013 - 2:13pm
Monday, May 13, 2013 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Join Judy Li and Peg Herring for an evening of discovery as we celebrate the publication of  Ellie's Log: Exploring the Forest Where the Great Tree Fell, a new book for children published by OSU Press. The forest and animals in the book are based on those found at the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest, where stream ecologist Judy Li has conducted much research, and where researchers have been learning about forests and streams for decades. Ellie's Log encourages children to explore the outdoors and to learn about the scientific process.

Thursday, May 9, 2013 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
"Reducing the Health Impacts of Air Pollution:  Measures, Models, and Policy" Perry Hystad, PhD. School of Population and Public Health, University of British Columbia. Dr. Hystad'ss research interests include environmental epidemiology, spatial exposure assessment, air pollution and interactions between social and environmental health determinants. An accomplished researcher, his doctoral thesis investigated the spatial epidemiology of lung cancer in Canada in relationship to air pollution and the social context of neighborhoods. This was one of the largest air pollution and lung cancer studied to date using a Canadian population case-control study. He has also conducted spatial exposure assessments and epidemiological analyses for other physical and social factors including radon, greenness, walkability, community belonging, and neighborhood deprivation.
