Report from the Curriculum Council Chair Lee thanked Mary Cluskey and Marv Pyles for their leadership during winter and spring terms. Following introductions, Lee outlined duties of the Council and made the following comments:

  • Contact him or Nunnemaker to add items to the agenda for upcoming meetings.
  • He suggested reading the annual report to refresh/familiarize yourself with last year’s topics.
  • The staggered meeting time during fall term was selected to accommodate as many members as possible.
  • The intent is to hold meetings to 1 hour and 20 minutes and meet alternate weeks. However, every scheduled meeting should be held on calendars until otherwise advised.
  • Lee will develop a list of advising issues to consider.

Category II Proposals –

  • Currently the online program asks for the old and new format in different locations within the proposal, but the Curriculum Council previously asked Tucker to request the proposer to provide a side-by-side version after the proposal is submitted. This is causing frustration for some proposers who feel they have provided the information as requested and should not have to provide revisions. Lee recommended that proposers be allowed to submit proposals in the manner requested online; recommendation accepted. McDaniel will determine what it will cost to make the change so that the side-by-side request appears in the online program. If your preference is to view the existing and proposed text side-by-side, you may cut and paste the text into that format.
  • Lee noted there was a recommendation in the 2005-06 annual report to eliminate the chair’s review of every Category II proposal. The recommendation was to have a primary reviewer for the proposal and a secondary reviewer from another college; if the two reviewers had a concern, the proposal would go to the chair. A decision on this recommendation will be made at the next meeting.

Curricular DeadlinesLee asked members to be thinking about adopting the Baccalaureate Core Committee’s (BCC) process of not working during the summer.
The BCC will distribute a message indicating deadlines for submitting proposals to be processed by the end of the academic year. It would be desirable to determine deadlines for the Curriculum Council and distribute a joint message indicating deadlines for both Category I and II proposals. Further discussion on this topic will occur at the next meeting.

Report from Academic ProgramsTucker distributed Curriculum Council Handbooks, noted some corrections and briefly outlined the contents.
Tucker indicated that some outside training related to the online system will be necessary for the new members, and that questions or concerns related to the system should be directed to her.
McDaniel expressed concern regarding an associated fee related to an Ag lecture course; she will contact the department to determine the justification for the fee.
McDaniel noted she has been dealing with a personal health issue since January and urged Council members to contact her staff for assistance if she is not available.

Program Reviews - McDaniel reported that Horticulture has received the report to review and is expected to submit comments soon. Regarding the Philosophy review, Marv Pyles was concerned about a committee letter; Lee will determine the status of the letter with Pyles.
Scheduled Reviews: Winter 2007 – Fisheries & Wildlife and General Agriculture; Spring 2007 – English. All are joint reviews with the Graduate School.

Category II Assignments – Continuing members will have the same assignments. New members were assigned as follows: Bailey - Engineering; Bobal – COAS and Pharmacy; and Browne – CLA M-Z.

New BusinessCluskey suggested that liaison related to proposals would be a good topic to address this year.

The next meeting will be October 19 from 9-11 AM.

Meeting was adjourned at 4:15.
