REPORT FROM CURRICULUM COUNCIL CHAIR

Loveland reported that Chaplen volunteered to review Category II proposals from Veterinary Medicine and Arthur volunteered to review Business proposals through December.

REPORT FROM ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

McDaniel reported that the Bioengineering Category I name change will go to the Graduate Council on October 20 and that the MSIS is being reviewed by the Budgets and Fiscal Planning Committee. McDaniel suggested that a discussion of Category I and II definitions be an agenda item for the Council.

DISCUSSION ITEM: COURSE SYLLABI REQUIREMENTS

Loveland felt that the Council needed to discuss whether the 'Minimum Requirements for Course Syllabi' document distributed on October 11 should actually be mandatory or recommended.

Suggested edits to the document:

  • Add the number of hours/week for both lecture and recitation.
  • Delete "...and Required Equipment" following "Prerequisites/Co-requisites"
  • Add enforced prerequisite courses.
  • Delete the name and contact information for Instructors and TA's since frequently TA's are not known when the course is proposed; it eliminates the opportunity for students to 'TA shop'; and information related to student employment can be restricted.
  • Delete "...and Course Policies" following "Assessment/Evaluation of Student Performance" - Academic Programs will work on alternate wording.
  • Delete "Statement Regarding Student Conduct" section.

Gomez and Bentley-Townlin met with the Council to discuss adding the following sentence to the "Statement Regarding Students with Disabilities" section: "Class materials will be made available in accessible format upon request." The purpose is to provide a way for students to connect with faculty to make collaborative arrangements. If a student has not contacted SSD, the faculty member should refer the student to SSD. They noted the need for additional wording for students who have not been through SSD that encourages them to make an appointment with the instructor ASAP to discuss accommodations.

Loveland asked if it would be possible to link from the Academic Programs site to an e-text example. Bentley-Townlin suggested developing a site listing resources offered by SSD. Greydanus stated they are working on guidelines to assist instructors when choosing video, textbooks, etc. He also noted there are resources in Central Web Services to take care of immediate needs.

Gomez and Bentley-Townlin will refine the statement and send back to the Council for review.

There was a discussion of whether it was an appropriate role for the Curriculum Council to ask faculty to put this statement on their syllabi.

  • It was suggested that there be a check-off on the front page of the Category II proposal that states faculty have reviewed the SSD statement.
  • It was also suggested that the statement remain on the syllabi and suggest that faculty review a particular link for additional information.

Decisions made: 1) The syllabi will be sent back if the statement is not included; and 2) Include a check-off box to indicate that the faculty member has reviewed the SSD resource site.
