- APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes from the November 13, 2003 meeting were
approved.
- REPORT FROM CURRICULUM COUNCIL CHAIR (C. Boyer)
The Category I Proposal: Master of Arts in Contemporary Hispanic
Studies has been approved by the OUS Academic Council for the external
review.
- REPORT FROM ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (B. Burton)
The College of Liberal Arts has suspended processing of new proposals,
including the M.A. in Women Studies and the M.A. in History. Dean Schaffer
will base future decisions on conditions within the College and the OSU
Strategic Plan.
The M.A. in Contemporary Hispanic Studies and the PhD in Community Impact
Anthropology will continue to move forward.
OUS has approved the following:
The name changes to Department of Clinical Sciences (Veterinary Medicine)
and Department of Design and Human Environment with some changes in degree
program names (College of Health and Human Sciences).
Proposals to eliminate the B.S. in Environmental Health and Safety and
to suspend the B.S. in History while maintaining the B.A. in History.
A study abroad program in Morelia, Mexico.
The proposed Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Natural Resources was
positively reviewed by the OUS Academic Council and will be on the agenda
for the next scheduled Board meeting. Their advice is to go forward with
planning, but indicate “pending Board approval” on official
materials.
- OLD BUSINESS
A) When a degree program is being eliminated, students already in must
be notified and assured they can complete their degree. Currently there
is a gap in time between proposing elimination and receiving approval.
The motion was made to require departments that are planning to
eliminate a program post “elimination pending” on the following
websites: Admissions, Online Catalog and the Department home page. Motion
carried.
B) Curriculum Council Representatives were charged with following up
on Category II proposals that need to be moved through the system.
- NEW BUSINESS
A) An efficient method to handle Cat II approvals for large numbers of
similar courses requiring similar updates needs to be developed.
The motion was made to have Departments submit a single example
of a course with an appendix listing all other courses having similar
changes. The list will be circulated at a Curriculum Council meeting
for blanket approval. Courses will be individually listed into the proposal
system after approval. Motion carried.
B) To expedite the process, Academic Programs requested permission to
be able to automatically approve blanket numbered courses, including internships
(X10s) and topics courses (X99s).
Motion made and carried.
C) Provost has asked the Curriculum Council to develop a policy stating
that any part of OSU, including OSU Cascades, cannot offer courses unless
they are listed in the catalog. Graduate Council should be included.
Action: Conversation closed until next meeting, January 22, 2004.
C. Boyer will get input from the Faculty Senate Executive Committee.
C. Boyer recessed the Curriculum Council meeting at 3:00 pm.
NEXT MEETING: Thursday January 22, 2004, in the President’s
Conference Room, Kerr Administration Bldg.
