The agenda for the November Senate meeting will include the reports and other items of business listed below.

    1. Approval of Minutes
      Approval of the October 2006 Faculty Senate minutes.
    2. Approval of the 2007 Apportionment Table
      The 2007 Faculty Senate Apportionment Table (consisting of OSU FTE in the ranks of Instructor and above, including Professional Faculty and Faculty Research Assistants and Associates) will be presented for approval.
    3. Faculty Senate Nomination and Elections
      Mary Flahive, Bylaws and Nominations Committee member, will present for approval the 2006 Slate of Candidates for: the Senate President-Elect, three new members of the Executive Committee (EC), and one Interinstitutional Faculty Senate (IFS) Senator. The President-Elect serves for one year, and then automatically assumes the presidency of the Faculty Senate; EC members serve two-year terms; and IFS terms are three years. Nominations will be taken from the floor; however, the nominator must obtain, in advance, the nominee's willingness to serve if elected.
    4. Ballot Counting Committee
      Three volunteers and two alternates are needed to assist in verifying the election results for the President-Elect and IFS ballots on December 6 from 9-11 AM; President Boggess will ask for volunteers from the floor.

    1. National Research Council Assessment
      Sally Francis, Graduate School Dean, will provide a status report of the National Research Council Assessment of the Research Doctorate, which is of critical importance to OSU since the results will be translated into ratings and rankings of doctoral programs relative to those at other universities in the nation.     2. Facilities Services Update
      Vincent Martorello, Director of Facilities Services, will present an update of Facilities Services activities. A document titled 'Faculty Senate Presentation on Strategic Plan' provides an overview of who Facilities Services employees are, what they do, as well as themes for the next 3-5 years, goals, and an implementation plan related to the goals.     3. Election Results Recap
      Jock Mills, Director of Government Relations, will provide a recap of November 7 election results.

      A moderated panel will discuss Student Engagement. For more information on the National Survey of Student Engagement see the following link:

    1. President-Elect, Executive Committee and IFS Elections
      As provided in the Senate Bylaws, (Article VI, Section 3) and amended on October 6, 1977, "additional nominations may be made from the floor and the nominations shall be closed." The Executive Committee requires that, if such nominations from the floor are made, the nominator must obtain, in advance, the nominee's willingness to serve if elected. The names of all nominees will be submitted to OSU This Week for publication.

      The University-wide election of the President-Elect and IFS Senator will be conducted between November 15 and December 5. Ballots will be distributed to all eligible voting members of the OSU faculty, in accordance with current Faculty Senate Bylaws. Voting must be completed no later than 5:00 PM on December 6 and results will be verified by the Counting Committee prior to the December 7 Faculty Senate meeting. The individual receiving the highest number of votes will be declared the winner in each of the elections.

      Election of new members of the Executive Committee will be conducted by written ballot at the December 7 Faculty Senate meeting. Those candidates receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected. Tie votes shall be resolved by written ballot in a run-off election.
    2. Instructions for Nomination and Election of Faculty Senators
      Upon receipt of all materials, and approval of the apportionment table, the Faculty Senate Office annually transmits Senatorial nomination and election instructions to the head of each voting unit; a sample letter is available for viewing.
    3. Faculty on 1039-Hour Appointments
      Retired Faculty Senators whose terms extend beyond December 31, but whose 1039-hour appointments terminate fall term, are no longer eligible to serve as a Senator. If you fall into this category, please contact the Faculty Senate Office at 737-4344 so a replacement can be identified to complete the remainder of your term.

If you are not filling a specified emeritus/retired position on the committee/council on which you serve, or if you are unsure, please contact Vickie Nunnemaker ( so a determination may be made and/or a replacement identified.
    4. Faculty Senate Meeting Dates
      Please reserve the following dates for Faculty Senate meetings during academic year 2006-07; check your monthly agenda to determine the location. All meetings are scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM:
      • 2006 - November 9 and December 7 (this is the first Thursday)
      • 2007 - January 11, February 8, March 8, April 12, May 10, and June 14.
    5. Award Solicitation
      L.L. Stewart Faculty Scholars Program - Newly established in 2005, this program recognizes outstanding faculty at Oregon State University and provides resources to stimulate creative advancements in teaching, research, and extended education. The Scholars Program is supported by an endowment established by L.L. Stewart and provides $20,000 in financial support for faculty selected as a Stewart Scholar. Funds may be used for any allowable teaching, research, or extended education expenses, including faculty release time. Recipients will have up to two years to spend the funds.       OSU Honorary Doctorate Award - Recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves in their selected areas of endeavor and are recognized for their eminence as national and international leaders and models. Due date for nominations is January 12, 2007. Additional information is online at

      OSU Distinguished Service Award - Recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to OSU, Oregon, the nation, and/or the world. Due date for nominations is January 15, 2007. Additional information is online at
