Building Access

Building and Residence Hall Access Policy

ACCESS TO CAMPUS FACILITIES

Most campus buildings and facilities are accessible to the university community and visitors from 7:00am-6:00pm Monday-Friday. Each building on campus has an individual schedule of openings and closings. Only staff with ID and students with After-Hour Passes and current ID are allowed in buildings after closing hours. Persons in buildings without proper ID and/or authorization will be escorted from the building. Failure to leave the premises may initiate a citation or arrest for criminal trespass. Students and staff allowing access to non-authorized persons may lose after-hours privileges.

RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES

OSU residential facilities available to students are residence halls, cooperative houses, family housing and the College Inn. Services and programs intended to enhance the quality of life and to assure the security and safety of the resident students are a joint responsibility of residents and residential life staff. Residents are issued a key that provides them with 24-hour access. Guest visiting policies are described in the Residential Handbook & Planner. Contact your assigned hall/coop staff or the University Housing & Dining Services for policy information.

All residence halls have live-in hall directors and residence assistants (RA). It is important that hall residents lock doors and notify their on-duty RA or Oregon State Police/Department of Public Safety (7-7000) if they observe any unusual persons or incidents. Information regarding the policies and procedures for the residence halls and cooperative houses are described more thoroughly in the Residence Hall Handbook & Planner. Security, safety and crime prevention involving locking of individual rooms, building entrances, theft prevention and personal safety are discussed with residents in crime prevention presentations. Presentations are given by Oregon State Police/Department of Public Safety, in hall/floor/house meetings, OSU Connect Orientation, Odyssey Classes, special sessions and events, and in printed materials and posters.

During holidays most residential facilities are closed. Those students who must remain on campus during that time are moved temporarily to other residential facilities until the halls are re-opened.

In addition to the publication of the document "Campus Crime Report," Building Security is published in the Residential Life Handbook and Planner that is issued to every residential student and available on the University Housing & Dining Services Web Page.

BUILDING SECURITY

All residence halls and some cooperatives are locked 24 hours a day. Keeping doors locked is important; don't open the doors for strangers or leave side doors propped open. Carry your keys when leaving your room or the building.

Take care of your keys. Don't loan them to other people or leave them where they might be taken. Keys are checked out only to assigned residents of each room.

How Security Issues are Considered in the Maintenance of Campus Facilities:

The Department of Public Safety promotes and responds to requests for office, building, and/or workspace site assessments and provides the inquirer feedback regarding the needs and methods by which to secure the identified space. These assessments include a review of security hardware, university/personal property security, and workspace security. In addition to the crime prevention activities, the Department of Public Safety notifies building managers of observed security problems through the delivery of a "security notification." This message indicates the finding of a propped door, a broken window, a non-functioning lock, and other such facility related security risks.

When the university requires maintenance and renovation work from a contracted company, the company must follow specified security standards and precautions. This information is provided to the contracted company by the Department of Facility Services.

The following policies are in place that address on-going facility usage:

Access to Campus Facilities

Most campus buildings and facilities are accessible to the university community and visitors from 7:00am-6: 00pm Monday-Friday.

University Keys

Keys are provided to authorized staff and some students who require access to a campus building or area after closing hours. If an issued key is lost, misplaced, stolen or you are unable to retrieve a key on request, you are required to report it immediately to The Department of Public Safety (7-3010) and the OSU Key Shop (7-3565). All keys are issued through the Key Shop and may not be duplicated, transferred or loaned to others. Keys are the property of Oregon State University and must be surrendered to departments, OSU Key Shop, or The Department of Public Safety on demand. Good key control by departments and persons issued keys is important in the prevention of crime in our buildings.
