- (1)"Long lived" waste is dry or aqueouse waste containing
any isotopes with greater than 90 day half-life (e.g.3H,14C).
Short lived dry and aqueouse waste is less than a 90 day half-life (e.g. 35S,
125I, 33P, 32P). Note: large quantities (>100µCi)
of dry or liquid 125I waste should not be placed in the same container
as other waste; call Radiation Safety (7-2227) for special pickup.
- (2)Some water-miscible liquid biological material may be picked
up as aqueous liquid at no charge. Contact Radiation Safety for more info.
DO NOT mix aqueous waste with biological waste.
- (3)Charges for mixed waste are determined on a case-by-case
basis, dependent upon vendor price. Cost will be based on the chemicals and
radioisotopes present in each container, and on the concentrations of each.
Mixed waste is any waste material that contains radioisotopes and possesses
other hazardous properties. Common examples include radiolabeled carcinogens,
solvents containing radioisotopes, contaminated lead, etc. Contact Radiation
Safety prior to generating any mixed waste other than LSC fluid. Contact
Radiation Safety for information on mixed waste charges.
- (4)"de minimus" is defined as LSC and
biological waste with less than 0.05 µCi/gm total for 3H and 14C
only. For LSC vials, this is equal to 400 µCi/2 ft3 (15 gal
drum=2ft3), or 300 µCi/2 gallon carboy of LSC fluid.
There is a surcharge for LSC waste containing isotopes other than 3H, 14C, 33P, 32P, 125I.
This surcharge ranges from as low as $0.15/uCi for 35S and 45Ca, or as high as $100/uCi for 32Si.
Contact Radiation Safety for more information.
- (5)The instrument calibration fee is charged by the OSU Radiation
Center. Instrument pickup and delivery are available at no charge from Radiation
Safety. Instruments must have annual calibration. Radiation Safety has some
instruments available as loaners while lab instrument is being calibrated
or repaired.
- (6)X-ray machine registrations are a biannual fee. These fees
are assessed by the Oregon State Health Division.
- (7)Sealed source leak tests includes counting, recording and
reporting. There is no charge to OSU groups for leak tests.
- (8)Dosimeters are considered "lost" when not returned
within 90 days from the end of the wear period; radiation exposure can not
be accurately determined for badges returned after 90 days from the end of
the wear period.
