Introduction

A collection of sixty lively, entertaining, and memorable Native American stories. While scholars will appreciate the authenticity of Pearson's stories and the insights they provide into the Tillamook tradition, general readers will simply delight in the energy, wit, and freshness of the tales.

Clara Pearson (1861-1948), a full-blood speaker of Nehalem, dictated these stories in English to Elizabeth Derr Jacobs in 1934. Pearson had learned the tales in her native tongue as a child. The work was edited by Melville Jacobs, a noted scholar of northwest Native literature.

Jarold Ramsey's introduction considers the historical, cultural, and aesthetic barriers to our appreciation of the stories, and provides information to enhance our understanding. Ramsey, who teaches at the University of Rochester, is the author of Coyote Was Going There.

The book also contains, in addition to the originally published book and Ramsey's introduction, notes to the original edition, a map of the area in which the tales occure, and a verse translation of one of the tales by Dell Hymes of the University of Virginia.
