Douglas fir stops growing because it can't pull water any higher
(The Telegraph UK, AP)

A fundamental reason why trees can grow only so tall, and then no higher, has been discovered: they run out of water. One of the tallest tree species on Earth, the towering Douglas-fir finally stops growing because it is unable to pull water any higher, a new study concludes. …People have always been fascinated by how some trees, such as Douglas-fir or redwoods, can grow so tall," said Prof Barb Lachenbruch, at Oregon State University. "This is not an easy thing to do. Think about trying to drink water through a narrow, 350-foot-long straw. It takes a lot of suction."

Students’ new way to cram: iTunes
(The Gazette Times)

Oregon State University’s mission as a land grant university dating back to the 19th century has evolved into a pledge to promote “economic, social, cultural and environmental progress for people across Oregon, the nation and the world through our graduates, research, scholarship, outreach, and engagement.” Chester Bateman believes that outreach should include evolving technology, and OSU is moving boldly ahead with a new way to share its wealth of ideas and research online. Bateman’s research focuses on lead users and learning. That means people who are ahead of the pack in using products or technologies. They find ways to enhance those services or products before they’re in general public use. His research focuses on users who take advantage of online innovation and communities, especially in an educational context.

Since the founding of the University Theatre, donations have been made to the costume shop. These cases contain costume pieces that have been constructed or built (theatre parlance for making and sewing a costume) and “real” clothing that has been donated to the Theatre Department over the decades.
