Fall Press Day

OVERVIEW

Fall Press Day is an annual event bringing together over 1,000 students and advisers from Oregon High Schools.  Fall Press Day highlights two keynote speakers and over 50 class sessions taught by experienced professionals and educators.  It is held on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis, Oregon.

KEYNOTERS

Fall Press Day is organized around two keynote sessions that start and end the day.  2008's first keynote presenter was new media projects editor for Greenspun interactive, Josh Williams.  Williams discussed the direction of New Media in the world of reporting and presenting the news.  The second keynote presenter of the day was Maruice Possley, criminal justice reporter for the Chicago Tribune.  His keynote adress focused on how to tell a story well and how making the truth known can change public opinion.  Both keynoters tied their message into what these issues mean for young aspiring journalists.

SESSIONS

Fall Press Day is broken into four 30-50 minute segments, with 10-15 class sessions to chose from.  Session topics range from how to put together a high school yearbook to how to fully utilize a newspaper staff.  Session highlights from Fall Press Day 2008 include a personal photo critque by Oregon State instructor Todd Weber, how to cover breaking news by Statesmen Journal Ruth Liao, and a crash course in making videos by CCTV training coordinator Greg Hiltz.

All sessions are found in the Fall Press Day booklet that is handed out during the beginning of the event.  Students, and advisers, are able to then choose which sessions to attend throughout the day.

ADVISER LUNCHEON

Herff Jones hosts a luncheon in the Memorial Union Ballroom for all advisers, speakers, and judges.   The luncheon serves as a way for educators to connect as well as take a break from the day.

NEW ADVISERS

JEA pilot project mentors host a new adviser forum during one of the day sessions for new advisers.  This gives a chance for those in the first couple years of publications advising to bring questions, concerns, and comments to discuss with trained journalism mentors.

WRITE-OFF COMPETITION

Fall Press Day holds a write-off competition in which students must enroll before the event.  During Fall Press Day, students write in various categories or bring photos to be judged.  Entries are judged by the professionals and educators who attend Fall Press Day.  Photos are judged prior to Fall Press Day, not on site.  A sheet of write off entry winners are available for advisers by the end of the day and certificates are sent off to winners in the weeks following Fall Press Day.
