Violet gall midge
Violet gall midge, Prodiplosis
violicola, was once considered the most important pest of the Violet
industry. This pest has become uncommon in recent times.
Feeding from the midge larvae causes the leaves to roll
and split into 2 bladder-like sacs. The petiole of the leaf is shortened
and becomes thick.
Cultural control practices include removal and disposal
of all infested leaves. Established and otherwise healthy plants usually
survive.
