SMART SPRAYER DEMONSTRATION
Hans Nelson Nursery - directions to the nursery
10 am, Tuesday, August 6th - Agenda: Grower-focused session
10 am, Wednesday, August 7th
- Agenda:Environmental and natural resource professionals session

A multi-state team from the USDA/ARS Application Technology Research Unit in Ohio, Ohio State University, Oregon State University, and the University of Tennessee are conducting research to evaluate intelligent spray systems in nursery production. The Smart Sprayer uses a laser sensor to detect height, width, and volume of the plants in the row. The sprayer then uses that information to vary the flow of pesticides from nozzles during applications. The Smart Sprayer reduces the volume of pesticide applied to a crop while maintaining the same level of control.

See a demonstration at Hans Nelson and Sons Nursery of the air-assisted Smart Sprayer which is being trialed in Oregon.  This is a versatile design which may be applicable to a variety of crops and production systems. This research is funded by a Specialty Crops Research Initiative (SCRI) grant from USDA-NIFA.
