Yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus)

Nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) roots are fibrous.  Tubers develop within the root system.  Plants regenerating from tubers are not controlled by most preemergence herbicides.  Cultivating or tilling nutsedge plants generally makes the infestation worse after mother plants are destroyed and new plants develop from underground tubers.

Nutsedge spread by rhizomes.  Seen above and below, rhizomes are white with scales.
