Nipplewort (Lapsana communis) flowers in mid to late summer.

Flower heads are yellow and approximately 3/4 inches in diameter.

Involucre is glabrous (no hairs) with only a single whorl of phyllaries.

Unlike many other plants in the family Asteraceae, nipplewort has no obvious or showy pappus.

In the image below, nipplewort seeds on the left are naked, while common groundsel seeds on the right are attached to a white pappus that aids in wind dispersal.
