Common lambsquarter (Chenopodium album) seedlings have linear cotyledons and first true leaves that are the typical hastate shaped.

Chalk glands are obvious on young seedlings, and appear as little white specks.

The underside of cotyledons and first true leaves are purple to pink in color.

Notice the size of the shoot system vs. root system on the lambsquarter seedling above. Even when seedlings appear small they have well-developed root systems, which would be relatively unaffected by preemergence herbicides.
