Curly dock (Rumex crispus) stems are jointed and partially to fully covered with a structure called the ocrea.  The ocrea is simply a membranous sheath that surrounds the stem at each node or joint.  The ocrea is a fused stipule.

As plants mature, the ocrea may become brittle and start to deteriorate.
