The bittercress below are seedlings that germinated 2.5 months ago (2.5 months prior to these pictures being taken).  They failed to develop beyond the cotyledon stage because there is no available N, P, or K in bark.  By dibbling fertilizers, you effectively remove the N, P, and K from the container surface and place it under the liner where it is available to your ornamental crop, but not available to germinating weeds.

Note that this media contained all other nutrients required by plants, it only lacked N, P, and K.
