Fresh weight of common groundsel 60 days after herbicide application.

Common groundsel (Senecio vulgaris)

In this trial no herbicide provided excellent preemergence control of common groundsel. Broadstar, Snapshot, and Regal O-O provided the best control.

This weed is consistently reported as one of the most difficult to control. Seed from this plant are wind-disseminated. A single plant can contaminate a large section of the nursery with seed. Vigorously control all common groundsel in and around the nursery before they flower or seed. Good sanitation will provide more effective control than herbicides.

Other data collected from this experiment (not presented here) show that the most effective herbicides reduced common groundsel germination by only 50%. Since herbicidal control is less than stellar, the next best thing is to prevent the introduction of seed into the container system. Less seeds means fewer weeds, regardless of herbicide performance.
