Lecture Series Takes on Issues of Childhood Risk and Resilience

CORVALLIS, Ore. – A lecture series on childhood relationships, risk and resilience at Oregon State University will open on Thursday, April 19, with a speech by Richard Lerner, the director of the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University.

Lerner’s talk, “Promoting Positive Youth Development: What Researchers, Practitioners, and Policy Makers Need to Know,” begins at 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Room 109 on the OSU campus. A reception will follow.

Cindy (a 1976 alum) and Duncan Campbell, creators of the Portland-based nonprofit Friends of the Children, endowed the lecture series with a gift of $150,000. Now titled the Duncan and Cynthia Campbell Lecture Series on Childhood Relationships, Risk, Relationships, and Resilience, the series will provide an ongoing forum to determine the most effective ways to face risk and to communicate these strategies to policy makers, practitioners, and funders.

The Campbells’ endowment also provides a summer internship each year at Friends of the Children headquarters in Portland for a student in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences.

On May 1, Richard Settersten, professor in human development and family sciences at OSU, will speak on “Navigating Early Adult Life: Challenges and Potentials of a New Landscape.” The lecture will take place at 1 p.m. in Memorial Union Room 109.

Both lectures are free and open to the public.
