COLLEGE OF SCIENCE HONORS FACULTY AND STAFF

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The College of Science at Oregon State University recently presented several awards for exceptional teaching, research or advising in recognition of faculty and staff accomplishments in 2004-05.

Most awards were made possible by donors, and each recipient received a plaque and stipend. The college also honored a faculty member from the wider university community who demonstrates outstanding outreach to K-12 students and teachers for science education.

The faculty and staff honored include:

  • Dawn J. Wright, geosciences, the Milton Harris Award in Basic Research;

  • Peiyong "Annie" Qu, statistics, the Thomas T. Sugihara Young Faculty Research Award;

  • Stevan J. Arnold, zoology, the F.A. Gilfillan Memorial Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Science;

  • Philip R. Watson, chemistry, the Frederick Horne Award for Excellence in Teaching Science;

  • Ronald E. Doel, geosciences, the Lloyd Carter Award for Outstanding and Inspirational Graduate Teaching;

  • Emile J. Firpo, chemistry, the Lloyd Carter Award for Outstanding and Inspirational Undergraduate Teaching;

  • Thomas P. Dick, mathematics, the Olaf Boedtker Award for Excellence in Academic Advising;

  • Joey Carson, chemistry, the Gladys Valley Exemplary Administrative Support Award;

  • Willie E. "Skip" Rochefort, chemical engineering, the Loren D. McKinley Science Educator Award.

    Sherman Bloomer, dean of the College of Science, told faculty and staff at the award presentation that individual contributions build the reputation of the college among students and stakeholders. Eighteen college faculty members were honored by national or international organizations within the last year, Bloomer said.

    In other recognition, the college's Department of Geosciences received the 2005 Leading Geosciences Partner Award from the National Park Service.
