CORVALLIS - Oregon State University will celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a two-week celebration Jan 6-21.
Activities are open to the public and most are free. OSU will cancel classes on Monday, Jan. 17, to allow students, faculty and staff to join the 23rd annual Peace Breakfast, which starts at 7:30 a.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Tickets will be available at the door, but advance ticket purchase is advised. Tickets, available at the MU business office, are $10 or $6 for students, with children under 5 free. Featured events at the breakfast will include the presentation of several community service awards and OSU students speaking on the theme, "The Dream: The Power, The Price and The Promise."
Later, the OSU community will embark on various day-long service projects in the community. For information, contact OSU Community Service Center at 541-737-3041. A candlelight walk and vigil is scheduled on the evening of Jan. 17. The walk starts at 6 p.m. at the OSU Black Cultural Center at 25th Street and Monroe Avenue with the procession ending with a program and vigil at the Memorial Union north steps.

4 p.m.: "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., The Teacher," a Celebration 2005 course (Ethnic Studies 199), presented by the Department of Philosophy and the Department of Ethnic Studies. The one-credit course begins here and requires attendance at four of six selected Celebration 2005 events. Strand Agricultural Hall 222. Information: 541-737-0709.
10 p.m.: All University Dance celebrating "The Dream: The Power, The Price and The Promise," through 2 a.m. Free to all OSU students, dancers are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for donation to Linn-Benton Food Share. Club Escape.
11 a.m.: Celebration 2005 Opening Ceremony, starting at 11 a.m. followed by Community Service Fair offering volunteer opportunities throughout the community, through 4 p.m. MU Ballroom.
5 p.m.: "Rise and Fall of Jim Crow," a two-hour screening of part one and two of a documentary on life for blacks in the segregated South following the Civil War. Discussion will follow screening. MU Room 208.
7 p.m.: "Building a Beloved Community," featuring keynote speaker Joy Leary, associate professor in the Graduate School of Social Work at Portland State University, and presentation of the City of Corvallis' Citizen's Martin Luther King Jr. Award. Majestic Theatre, 115 S.W. Second St., Corvallis.
5 p.m.: "Rise and Fall of Jim Crow," two-hour presentation of part three and four of the documentary, which traces the life of blacks in the segregated South following the Civil War. An open forum will follow the screening. MU Room 208.
2 p.m.: "The Way Home," a 90-minute screening of the film about race, gender and class in the United States, followed by an open discussion. MU Room 208.
6 p.m.: "International Perspectives on the Dream," a 90-minute open forum focusing on what Martin Luther King's dream means to international students. International Forum.
3 p.m.: Two-hour children's celebration, Majestic Theatre.
5 p.m.: Birthday party for Martin Luther King, Jr. Black Cultural Center, 25th Street and Monroe Avenue.
7:30 a.m.: Peace Breakfast, with the Community Readers Theatre, music and public service awards. Tickets are $10, $6 for students with children under 5 admitted free. MU Ballroom.
9:30 a.m.: "Day of Service," featuring various volunteer projects throughout the region. Contact OSU Community Service Center for information at 541-737-3041.
6 p.m.: Candlelight vigil, starts with a march from the Black Cultural Center to the MU Quad. Bring your own candle.
Noon: "Where's My 40 Acres and Other Broken Promises," two-hour panel discussion. MU Room 206. 6 p.m.: Oratory Contest, OSU students will display their oratory skills in addressing a social issue. Participants must register by Jan. 10 by sending details of their talk to deltasigmatheta@oregonstate.edu. MU Room 212.
7 p.m.: "An Evening of Song and Poetry," a two-hour performance in which participants are invited to present poetry or songs that pertain to social issues, injustice, discrimination, racism, peace, freedom, equality, and justice. MU Powell Leadership Center.
2 p.m.: Interfaith prayer service, MU Room 213.
