OSU PROFESSOR RECEIVES KANSAS AWARD

CORVALLIS - A weed scientist from Oregon State University has been recognized for his career achievements by another prominent U.S. land grant university.

Arnold P. Appleby, a professor emeritus in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Oregon State University, has been named the 2001 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award in Teaching and Research from Kansas State University's College of Agriculture.

Appleby will receive the award at the university's December commencement ceremony. He received a bachelor of science degree in agricultural education from Kansas State in 1957 and a master of science degree in agronomy from the school in 1958.

Appleby joined the OSU faculty in 1959 as a weed scientist, received a doctorate in crop science from OSU in 1962, and retired from Oregon State in 1992.

Among many awards during his OSU career, he received Outstanding Teacher and Outstanding Researcher awards from the Weed Science Society of America. He also received three distinguished professor awards from OSU and in 1980 received the Outstanding Teacher Award from OSU's College of Agricultural Sciences.

Appleby served as major professor or co-major professor for 74 OSU graduate students. Many now are weed scientists in various parts of the world.
