CORVALLIS - David Hoffman, the new director of University Bands at Oregon State University, will conduct the OSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble in a free public concert on Thursday, Nov. 9. The performance begins at noon in OSU's Memorial Union Lounge.
Music majors and non-majors take part in this group. From the flute to the tuba, nearly all the musical instruments played are wind instruments, along with a percussion rhythm section. The diverse concert program will portray musical styles from the Renaissance to the present.
The program begins with a Renaissance piece for brass ensemble, and includes Benjamin Britten's "Courtly Dances," Bach's "My Jesus! Oh What Anguish," and John Zdechlik's spirited "Celebrations."
The concert features a special focus on marches, that includes a work jointly composed by G. Donizetti and G. Rossini entitled "Two Marches for the Sultan Abdul Medjid." Other works include "Three Merry Marches," Sousa's "The Thunderer," and Ira Hearshen's "After the Thunderer," an attempt by the composer to extend Sousa's original work.
Band director Hoffman joined the music department faculty this fall, where he directs the wind ensemble and the OSU Jazz Ensemble, and teaches courses in conducting, music education and jazz studies. He earned his Ph.D. in music education from the University of Minnesota, his master's degree in wind conducting from Northwestern University and his bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois. -
