CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Opera Workshop will present an evening of opera scenes by Mozart, Gilbert and Sullivan, Kurt Weill and Benjamin Britten, on Friday, Nov. 17. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. in Benton Hall Room 202 on the OSU campus.

Portland resident Brenda Nuckton, an assistant stage director at the Metropolitan Opera, will lead students from the OSU vocal studies program in fully staged scenes from "Cosė fan tutte," "The Magic Flute," "The Pirates of Penzance," "Street Scene," "Three Penny Opera," and "The Rape of Lucretia."

Music direction is by Richard Poppino, Nicola Nine, and Steven Zielke, all members of the OSU music department faculty. Admission is free.

Nuckton recently made her European debut, directing Carlisle Floyd's "Susannah" for the Grand Theatre de Geneve in Switzerland. In the fall of 1999, she directed the same production, originated by Tony Award-winning director Robert Falls, for The Washington Opera at the Kennedy Center.

Last season she was the stage director for the Sarasota Opera Apprentice program, and she will return to Florida next year in the same capacity. Recently, she directed Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" for Portland State University, and Verdi's "Aida" for Houston Grand Opera.

Her production of the world premier of "Barricade" for Rice University was awarded first place in the National Opera Association's Opera Production Competition.

Nuckton has also spent four seasons as an assistant director with the Metropolitan Opera. She received a master's degree in vocal performance from The Peabody Institute and a bachelor of arts in music from Lewis and Clark College.
