PORTLAND - Seven family-owned businesses will be named the 2000 Oregon Family Businesses of the Year at an awards dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 15th, at the Oregon Zoo, 40001 S.W. Canyon Road in Portland.

Registration for the daylong educational event, co-hosted by Oregon State University's Austin Family Business Program and lead sponsor, U.S. Bank, begins at 12:30 p.m. The cost for the event and dinner is $75 per person or $50 per person for U.S. Bank business customers. For registration information, contact Austin Family Business Program toll-free at 800-859-7609, or online.

Patricia Frishkoff, director of OSU's Austin Family Business Program, will start the day at 1 p.m. with a talk on "Family Business Basics in Black and White." Following the talk, family business owners will form roundtable discussions focusing on topics such as family values and balance; business growth and technology; finances and taxes; and succession issues such as choosing leaders and forming exit strategies.

A facilitator and at least two business owners will participate at each table. The talks will give people the chance to talk with other families and learn what works and what doesn't work for family businesses, Frishkoff said.

Sponsors for this event include: U.S. Bank, Perkins & Co., P.C., Tarlow, Jordan & Schrader and Mass Mutual.

Social hour begins at 5 p.m. with entertainment by the Hot Shots-a family-owned tap dancing troupe. Dinner and the awards celebration will follow at 6 p.m
