Noted geographer to speak

CORVALLIS - Michael Goodchild, an international expert in the emerging field of "geographic information science," will speak Nov. 16 at Oregon State University.

Goodchild, professor and chair of the Department of Geography at the University of California at Santa Barbara, has received numerous career honors for his work in this field which blends geography, information systems science, geodesy, mathematics, physics, computer science and other areas.

GIS systems are now widely used in academia, industry and government, on problems ranging from global climate change to disaster preparedness and natural resource management.

His presentation, titled "Challenges in Geographic Information Science," will be in Wilkinson Hall, Room 235, at 4 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
