OSU to host big jazz ensemble concert

CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Big Jazz Ensemble will present a concert on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in OSU's Memorial Union Ballroom.

The free concert will feature a wide variety of jazz tunes from the pens of many well-known composers and arrangers, such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Sammy Nestico and Chick Corea. The program includes selections such as "Caravan," "C Jam Blues," "God Bless the Child" and "Spain."

The OSU Big Jazz Ensemble is a group of 22 undergraduate students, directed by James Phillips, a part-time faculty member of the OSU Department of Music. Phillips also teaches music in Eugene, plays in a 1930's band, The Rhythm Kings, and directs the Youth Jazz Ensemble for the Oregon Festival of American Music Youth Academy. He received his master's degree in saxophone and jazz studies from the University of Oregon.

Featured student soloists include Bruce Green, trombone; Aaron Barnes, alto saxophone; Nick Budge, trombone; Tim McLaughlin, guitar; Damon Doelger, alto saxophone; Ryan Knoll, tenor saxophone; and Mike McDaniel, drum set.
