CORVALLIS - Two Oregon State University choirs and the OSU-Corvallis Symphony Orchestra will join for a holiday celebration concert at LaSells Stewart Center on Friday, Dec. 5. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. LaSells Stewart Center is located at 875 S.W. 26th in Corvallis.
The OSU-Corvallis Symphony Orchestra, directed by Marlan Carlson, will open the program with "Concerto for oboe and violin in C minor" by Johann Sebastian Bach. Featured soloists are Annalisa Morton , oboe, and Michael Grossman, violin.
The orchestra and OSU Chamber Choir, directed by Gary Frame, will perform the next two pieces: "Estampie Natalis" by Vaclav Nelhybel, and Franz Schubert's "Magnificat in C major."
"The 'Magnificat' is a wonderful example of the young Schubert at his most exuberant," Carlson said.
Following intermission, University Singers, directed by Matt Strauser, will perform "Carol of the Bells," "Dixit Maria," and "Mary Had a Baby." The chamber choir will sing four more pieces.
The orchestra will perform Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Concerto for Bass Tuba," featuring tuba soloist James Sours. Sours is an OSU student who spent three years playing tuba with the Portland Youth Philharmonic while in high school.
In the finale, both choirs will join the orchestra for "What Sweeter Music," by John Rutter, and "A Merry Christmas," arranged by Arthur Warrell.
Tickets are $14 for general admission and $6 for students. They are available in Corvallis at Rice's Pharmacy, Gracewinds Music, The Emporium, and the OSU music department, and in Albany at Sid Stevens Jewelers. Organizers encourage early ticket purchase as this concert tends to sell out.
