“Being recognized for the best paper in the region is a tremendous start, but it is the just the beginning.  My goal all along was to be the best college paper in the country. We’re one step closer to being just that,” Editor-In-Chief Brandon Southward said.

The Daily Barometer was awarded the following Mark of Excellence awards at the regional conference in Tacoma, Wash. on March 31:

First place, “Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper”

First place, “Sports Column Writing,”  Jesse Severson, writer

First place, “Breaking News Reporting,” Kristin Pugmire, writer

Second place, “General News Photography,” Vinay Bikkina, photographer

Second place, “Sports Column Writing,” Grady Garrett, writer

Second place, “Sports Writing,” Grady Garrett, writer

SPJ’s region 10 includes Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Alaska and Washington.  The first-place award winners will go on to compete at the national competition.

“These awards reflect the commitment to excellence of our student journalists. The Daily Barometer has a long history of greatness.  The students have honored the legacy with these awards,” said Julia Sandidge, director of Student Media.
