Oregon State University is facing off against the University of Oregon in a competition with some seriously high stakes. The PacificSource Healthy Life Civil War Challenge encourages Beavers and Ducks to be active, healthy and civic-minded.

The second annual event runs now through Nov. 21, and asks OSU participants to pledge to go healthy for 30 days in one of the four categories: healthy eating, tobacco cessation, stress reduction, or physical activity. Participants can also sign up for the 5-2-1-0 in 30 Challenge©, developed by medical experts from Marion Polk County Medical Society, which encourages them to make a daily commitment to consuming five servings of fruits and vegetables, limit their screen (television) time to two hours, engage in one hour of physical activity, and consume zero sugar sweetened beverages.

For every pledge to “Go Healthy” this Civil War, PacificSource will donate $1 to a local charity, up to $10,000. Charities include the Mid Willamette Family YMCA of Albany and the Linn-Benton Food Share in Corvallis.

Duck and Beaver fans can visit healthylifechallenge.org to take the PacificSource Healthy Life Civil War pledge, sign up for the 5-2-1-0 in 30 Challenge and commit to living a healthier lifestyle.

All participants who make a pledge by Nov. 21 will be entered into a drawing for a free pair of Civil War tickets. Those participating in the 5-2-1-0 Challenge will be entered into a drawing for an iPad.

Well, the big day is here, but in Corvallis, we’ve been gearing up for weeks. On Wednesday, members of the MUPC dished up free orange and black floats for students and staff passing through the Memorial Union Commons, and gave away t-shirts to the first lucky few who showed up.

The Corvallis Boys & Girls Club held a Civil War sale last week. Children sold pillows and Santa’s stuffed with a chocolate bar and they are making everything from scratch (except the chocolate bars). They made both OSU and U of O colors of these items and they were sold in the front lobby of the club.

The kids sold $134.15 worth of goods, with a majority spent on Beaver gear. They made around 150 pillows total.
