University Day 2014

University Day 2014 included a breakfast for new employees, a keynote address by higher education reporter Jeff Selingo, a lunch and expo, and a number of faculty and staff awards (listed below).

The Beaver Champion Award was given to Charlotte Pritchard of Facilities Services, and the accreditation team in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences (Tammy Bray, JoAnne Bunnage, Marie Harvey, Mark Hoffman, Roger Rennekamp and Sheryl Thornburn.

The Student Learning and Success Teamwork Award recognizes departments or interdisciplinary groups at Oregon State University that have demonstrated exceptional teamwork in creating and sustaining an exemplary teaching and learning environment to advance the university’s strategic goal of student success and excellence.

This year’s award goes to the Central Advising Staff in the College of Liberal Arts: Ashleigh Anderson, Beau Baca, Louie Bottaro, Kathy Fultz, Tristen Shay and Kerry Thomas.

We are pleased to honor the Central Advising Staff in the College of Liberal Arts with the Student Learning and Success Teamwork Award.

The Excellence in Graduate Mentoring Award honors graduate faculty members who have extraordinary records of excellence and effectiveness in mentoring graduate students. Toni Doolen, professor in the School of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering in the College of Engineering, is this year’s honoree.

We are pleased to honor Toni Doolen with the Excellence in Graduate Mentoring Award.

The Herbert F. Frolander Graduate Teaching Assistant Award recognizes graduate students who have excelled in their capacity as teaching assistants.
For 2014, this honor is given to Adam Chouinard, graduate student in the Department of Integrative Biology in the College of Science.

We are pleased to award Adam Chouinard with the Herbert F. Frolander Graduate Teaching Assistant Award.

The Promising Scholar Award recognizes junior faculty whose outstanding scholarship has been recognized by peers, and who have demonstrated a high level of accomplishment over a relatively short period of time at OSU. The 2014 recipient is Adam Branscum, associate professor in the School of Biological & Population Health Sciences in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences.

For his valuable contributions to OSU, we are pleased to honor Adam Branscum with the Promising Scholar Award.

The OSU Impact Award for Outstanding Scholarship recognizes OSU faculty who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship in a specific project or activity resulting in substantial impact beyond the university setting. This year’s recipient is Melissa Cheyney, an associate professor of anthropology with the College of Liberal Arts.

We are pleased to honor Melissa Cheyney with the OSU Impact Award for Outstanding Scholarship.

The OSU Award for Outstanding Service to Persons with Disabilities recognizes a person who goes above and beyond requirements of their normal job description to accommodate and assist persons with disabilities. This year’s award is given to Robert Stone, head of the School of Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering in the College of Engineering.

We are pleased to honor Robert Stone with the OSU Award for Outstanding Service to Persons with Disabilities.

The OSU Exemplary Employee Award honors one professional faculty member and one classified staff member for their outstanding performance. This year’s professional faculty member is Captain Fred Jones, former marine superintendent for ship operations in Newport.

The classified staff member receiving The OSU Exemplary Employee Award is Manfred Dittrich, a development engineer with the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the College of Engineering.

The University Mentoring and Professional Development Award recognizes those who excel in supporting and encouraging OSU employees to participate in professional and/or educational development opportunities. This year’s recipient is Melissa Cheyney, an associate professor of anthropology with the College of Liberal Arts.

We are pleased to present Melissa Cheyney with the University Mentoring and Professional Development Award for 2014.

The Outreach and Engagement Award recognizes significant and meritorious achievement that enhances reciprocal learning with our students, partners and stakeholders through outreach and engagement activities. For 2014, that honor goes to Garry Stephenson, professor in the department of crop and soil science in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Director of the Center for Small Farms and Community Systems.

We take a great deal of pleasure in awarding Garry Stephenson the OSU Outreach and Engagement Award.

The purpose of the OSU Professional Faculty Excellence Award is to distinguish exceptional service of a faculty member in a role other than the traditional areas of teaching, research or extension. That honor in 2014 goes to Lowell Fausett, the College of Agricultural Sciences and Agricultural Experiment Station’s architect and facilities project manager.

We are pleased to recognize Lowell Fausett with the OSU Professional Faculty Excellence Award.

The purpose of the International Service Award is to recognize exemplary, on-going contributions of OSU faculty and staff to the internationalization of the university by enhancing student, faculty, and staff awareness and participation in international education, research, and related activities. Paul Jepson, professor of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology in the College of Agricultural Sciences, is this year’s recipient.

The OSU Academic Advising Award recognizes undergraduate academic advising by professional faculty rank as well as fixed-term academic rank faculty whose primary role is advising, and acknowledges advising as a profession making a pivotal contribution to the OSU community. In 2014, the honoree is Jeff Malone, assistant head advisor with the University Exploratory Studies Program.

We are pleased to honor Jeff Malone with the OSU Academic Advising Award.

The purpose of the Outstanding Faculty Research Assistant Award is to recognize scholarly achievement and a level of innovation and effort that far exceeds expectations. This year’s recipient is Carolyn Breece, faculty research assistant in the department of horticulture in the College of Agricultural Sciences. Breece is the coordinator of the Oregon Master Beekeeper Program, and researches honeybee health with Ramesh Sagili.

We are pleased to honor Carolyn Breece with the Outstanding Faculty Research Assistant Award.

The Industry Partnering Award recognizes a faculty member who achieves extraordinarily high impact innovations through research collaborations with industry. Stephen Strauss, distinguished professor with the department of Forest Ecosystems & Society in the College of Forestry, is this year’s recipient.

The OSU Faculty Innovator Award recognizes a faculty member whose extraordinarily high impact innovations from research are translated into transformative results that help promote economic development and social progress. This year the award is being given to Brian Paul, professor of mechanical, industrial and manufacturing engineering in the College of Engineering.

We are proud to name Brian Paul as this year’s OSU Faculty Innovator.

The OSU Faculty Teaching Excellence Award honors unusually significant and meritorious achievement in teaching and scholarship that enhances effective instruction. In 2014, the recipient is Brigitte Cluver, instructor with the School of Design and Human Environment in the College of Business.

We are pleased to honor Brigitte Cluver with the OSU Faculty Teaching Excellence Award.

The D. Curtis Mumford Faculty Service Award recognizes individuals for exceptional, ongoing, dedicated and unselfish concern for and service to OSU faculty. This year’s honoree is Kristen Milligan, assistant professor of zoology in the College of Science, and Program Coordinator of the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO).

For everything she has done for this university, we are pleased to present Kristen Milligan with the D. Curtis Mumford Faculty Service Award.

The Richard M. Bressler Senior Faculty Teaching Award is given to an individual with longtime service to Oregon State University who has demonstrated a major commitment to undergraduate instruction over an extended period of time. This year’s recipient is Janine Trempy, a professor of microbiology in the College of Science and College of Agricultural Science.

We are pleased to present Janine Trempy with the Richard M. Bressler Senior Faculty Teaching Award.

The Elizabeth P. Ritchie Distinguished Professor Award recognizes an individual for outstanding undergraduate teaching; research, particularly related to improvement of instruction; and professional leadership. In 2014, the honoree is Tevian Dray, professor of mathematics in the College of Science.

We are proud to present Tevian Dray with the Elizabeth P. Ritchie Distinguished Professor Award for 2014.

The OSU Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award is given to the person who demonstrates outstanding professional achievement through teaching and scholarship, service to the university and the community, and professional leadership, nationally and internationally. This year, there are two winners, Joey Spatafora, professor of botany and plant pathology, and Bernadine Strik, professor of horticulture, both with the College of Agricultural Sciences.

We are proud to present the 2014 OSU Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award to Joey Spatafora and Bernadine Strik.
