Success through collaboration was the key to this year’s University Day 2012 celebration, which took place on campus Sept. 18. Instead of the usual keynote speaker, a panel of OSU leaders shared their thoughts on “Succeeding Together.”

Led by James Cassidy, senior instructor with the Department of Crop and Soil Science, the panelists included Susie Brubaker-Cole, associate provost for Academic Success and Engagement, Susana Rivera-Mills, associate dean for the College of Liberal Arts, and Don Neubaum, associate dean for Research and Faculty Development.

The panelists discussed everything from carefully choosing your co-workers to learning to adjust to a new culture by depending on collaboration, to the pros and cons of electronic communication in a busy world.

President Ed Ray talked about some of the last year’s successes, including a steady stream of research funding and a highly successful capital campaign, and both attendees and external audience members from OSU’s other branches and Extension and Research stations participated in a prize drawing that included hotel stays in Portland, passes to OSU sporting events, and many opportunities to sample some of Oregon’s best cheeses and beverages.

As always, a large portion of the event was taken up with the honoring of this year’s University Day award winners (see list below). The celebration was followed by an outdoor barbecue lunch of pulled pork sandwiches and sunburgers, and then an Expo in the CH2M HILL Alumni Center featuring booths representing OSU’s colleges, departments and resources.
