OSU graduate student dies in China

Elena Raquel Sánchez Olguin

A graduate student at Oregon State University died last week in China where she was attending a conference.

Elena Raquel Sánchez Olguin, a PhD candidate in weed science, died on July 28 in Hangzhou after being hospitalized on June 19 while attending the International Weed Science Congress.

Born in Costa Rica, Sánchez graduated from Conservatorio de Castella, the Instituto Tecnologico de Costa Rica, and with honors from the Universidad de Costa Rica.  She was active in the Association of Latin Students. A memorial service will be held in Corvallis in the coming weeks.  Details will be announced when available.

Sánchez is survived by her mother, Leticia, and brother, Gerardo, who flew to China and stayed near her throughout her hospitalization. Most of Sánchez’s medical expenses are covered by insurance; however, her family’s expenses are not.  In order to help defray part of the family’s costs, we have established an account with the OSU Agricultural Research Foundation.  Donations can be sent directly to ARF or to the Department of Crop and Soil Science.  The addresses are below; please make out your checks to the OSU ARF- Elena Sánchez Support Fund.
