Six Members of the Oregon State University Marching Band recently performed in Beijing, China, as members of the international Olympic Orchestra. Kelly Jones of Tigard, an anthropology major and captain of the OSUMB color guard, was joined in Beijing by color guard members Kelsey Lee, also of Tigard, a forest and civil engineering major; Jennifer Osburn, of Silverdale, Wash., a zoology major; Nicole Nasholm of Eugene, a bio-engineering major; and Katie Whitwell of Silverdale, Wash., a mechanical engineering major. Megan Ilg, of Beaverton, an OSUMB drum major, also participated. All were selected for the orchestra after being nominated by Brad Townsend, OSU director of athletic bands. The Olympic Orchestra was conducted by the University of Washington's "Husky Band" director, Brad McDavid, and included a select group of 1,700 student musicians from Europe, Australia, China, and the U.S. In addition to performing at Olympic ceremonies, the orchestra performed at the Great Wall of China, and gave a historical performance on August 4 in Tiananmen Square - the first foreign group ever to perform there.
