Special Events for SPA '98

Tuesday

David Heath will give a public lecture on financial derivatives from 7 - 8pm in LaSells Stewart Center on OSU campus. The SPA 25th Anniversary Reception will follow.

Wednesday

Two events are planned for Wednesday.

First, after the morning invited paper session, a bus will leave at noon from Peoples Park to go to Mary's Peak, the highest point in the Oregon Coast Range. A moderate 1 hour hike through old growth forest to the top will be available to anyone interested, or you may take the bus to the parking lot near the top and take a shorter hike. Mary's Peak offers spectacular views of the Willamette Valley, the Pacific Coast and Ocean, the Cascade Mountain Range and the Siuslaw National Forest. Old growth forest, wildflowers, and various wildlife abound on the mountain itself. Transportation and a sack lunch are provided for $7. The bus will return at 3pm. Sign-up will be available at SPA registration.

Second, SPA is hosting a Native American Salmon Bake and wine tasting at Tyee Winery. Alaskan salmon is being flown in for this special occasion to honor 25 years of SPA. Tyee Winery is located in the southern Willamette Valley (just south of Corvallis) and offers the finest choice of this area's many wines. As an additional treat, music will be provided by The Knott Brothers, a Pacific-Northwest Bluegrass favorite. A bus will be available at McNary Hall at 4:30pm to take participants to the winery. Admission is covered with SPA registration. Additional guests can sign-up at the SPA registration desk; the cost is $25.

Thursday

Lunch will be served in The Memorial Union East (Snell Hall). Tom Kurtz will give a short presentation on the past 25 years of SPA. A CCSP meeting will follow at 1pm.

The organizers would like to recommend attendance at the Oregon Bach Festival which makes a special appearance in Corvallis on Thursday. Jeffrey Kahane, world-renowned pianist, will play the Goldberg Variations, at 7pm in LaSells-Stewart Center. Tickets are $18 and $15.

Friday

To show our appreciation for an exciting week, the OSU Mathematics Department will host a picnic for the participants in SPA and the Research Experiences for Undergraduates at Avery Park. Burgers, hot dogs, salad, chips, sodas, and beer will be provided. Avery Park is a 15 minute walk south on 15th Street (McNary Hall is located on Jefferson and 15th St.). The fun starts at 4pm and goes until 8pm.
