- Deciduous shrub, 4-5 ft (1.2-1.5 m) tall, more compact than species, rounded, dense. Leaves simple, opposite, 2-4 cm long, not as wide, elliptic-ovate to elliptic-obovate, glabrous, even glossy, above but pubescent on the veins below, prominent veins. Flowers are purple-red in the bud, opening to whitish-pink.

- Hardy to USDA Zone 3 The species (S. meyeri) is thought to be native to northern China, but its origins are obscure, and apparently it has never been found in the wild (Fiala, 1988).
